Wassil Gjuselew

Wassil Todorov Gjuselew (also Vassil Todorov Gjuzelev , Bulgarian Васил Тодоров Гюзелев ; born October 19, 1936 in Dimitrovgrad , Bulgaria ) is a Bulgarian historian.

From 1954 to 1959 Gjuselew studied history and archeology at the University of Sofia . He then worked as an employee at the Historical Museum in Dimitrovgrad. From 1961 to 1972 he was assistant for medieval history of Bulgaria at the University of Sofia and received his doctorate in 1971. From 1972 to 2003 he taught as a professor of Bulgarian medieval history at the University of Sofia, whose Institute of Bulgarian History he headed from 1974 to 1984. In addition, from 1975 to 1977 he was director of the National History Museum in Sofia and from 1977 to 1983 head of the department for medieval history of Bulgaria at the Institute for History of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences . From 1984 to 1990 Gjuselew was director of the Bulgarian Research Institute in Vienna .

From 1972 to 1980 Gjuselew was an employee of the Bulgarian State Security Service.

Gjuselew has been a corresponding member of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences since 1995 and a full member since 2003 . In 2003 he received the Herder Prize from the Alfred Toepfer Foundation .
