Momchilgrad [ ˈmɔmtʃiɫˌɡrat ] ( Bulgarian Момчилград ) is a city in southern Bulgaria , in Kardzhali Oblast , near the cities of Kardzhali and Jebel . Momchilgrad is the second largest city in Kardzhali Oblast.

Momchilgrad is located in the southeast of the Rhodope Mountains .
The city is located on the river Varbiza (Bulgarian Върбица) - a tributary of the Arda , which in turn is a tributary of the Maritsa .
In the region lies the Elenowoto Stopanstwo nature reserve (Bulgarian Еленовото стопанство; German translation: deer economy).
history
The place was originally called Mestanlı (Turkish; Bulgar. Местанлъ) or in the Bulgarian version Mestanlij (Мъстанлий) and was renamed in 1934 in honor of Momchil . Momchilgrad has been a city since 1937.
In the immediate vicinity of Momchilgrad, near the village of Tatul, is the archaeological site of Swetilischto, which is said to be the grave of Orpheus .
In the village there is the church of Sveti Tsar Boris the Baptist (bulg. Свети цар Борис покръстител, for the person see: Boris I. ). The church holiday is May 2nd. There is also the Tschitalischte New Life (Bulgarian Нов Живот).
Since 2005, the city has been namesake of Momchil Peak , a mountain on Greenwich Island in Antarctica, together with Momchil .
economy
In the rural surroundings of the city, mainly tobacco and paprika are grown, as well as cattle breeding (sheep, cattle). In the industrial area of the city there are wood processing, metal processing companies, as well as textile companies.
