The Arda ( Bulgarian Арда , Greek Άρδας Ardas , Latin Artiscus ) is a river in southern Bulgaria and northeastern Greece in ancient Thrace . It is about 300 km long, of which 241 km flow on Bulgarian territory.
The source of the Arda is near the Ardin summit in the Bulgarian Rhodope Mountains . The Arda then continues to flow on Greek territory until it flows into the Mariza at the Greek-Turkish border near the city of Edirne and Karaağaç . In the course of the Arda River in Bulgaria are the dams Kardzhali , Studen Kladenets and Ivaylovgrad . There is another dam in Greece.
Tributaries to the Arda are the Wirbiza and Krumowiza.
On the Arda are u. a. the cities:
- Rudosem (Рудозем)
- Kardzhali (Кърджали)
- Madscharowo (Маджарово)
The river is namesake for Arda Peak , a mountain on Livingston Island in Antarctica.
