history

The starting point for the establishment of an insurance company that insures the population against the risk of fire damage was the great fire in Schöppenstedt in 1743, in which a considerable part of the city's buildings and harvest supplies were destroyed.

Duke Carl I (1713–1780, Duke of Braunschweig and Lüneburg, from 1735 Prince of Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel) founded the state fire insurance company in 1754. The insurance company began operations with four employees and in the second year after it was founded, it generated a turnover in the amount of money of around 6,300 thalers . The model for the state fire insurance institute in Braunschweig was the oldest fire fund in the world, the Hamburger Feuerkasse (founded in 1676). The school regulations of the old Braunschweig region (1753), the founding of the Collegium Carolinum, the forerunner of the TU Braunschweig (1745), the Ducal Leyhaus Braunschweig (1765) and the porcelain factory Fürstenberg (1747) all go back to the initiatives of Duke Karl I. In 1837, the Brandkasse received the monopoly on building insurance. This monopoly formed the basis for the continued dynamic business development. In 1850 the turnover of the insurance was almost 130,000 thalers.

In 1919, the state government of the then Free State of Braunschweig transferred the management of the fire insurance company to the board of directors of the Braunschweigische Staatsbank, one of the forerunners of today's Nord / LB. In 1924, the Public Movable Insurance Company and the Public Life Insurance Company were founded out of the State Bank . The public received the monopoly for these two insurance lines as well. With Erich Achterberg, Braunschweigische Staatsbank. Two centuries of contemporary history. it says:

“The Braunschweigische Staatsbank and the Braunschweigische Landes-Brandversicherungsanstalt became almost one unit, the name of the insurance company was carved on the entrance gate of the state bank. But banking and insurance are different things and so the separation had long been an obvious one. With the dissolution or extensive loosening of the bond between the bank and the insurance company, the relationship between the state bank and the public property insurance and public life insurance, which was initially looked after by the state fire insurance and later became independent, came to an end. "

In 1944, almost all of the company's documents were burned in a bomb attack.

Between 1954 and 1974 the number of employees rose from 86 to 522, the group's turnover was around 100 million DM in 1971, around 400 million DM in 1990, around 400 million euros in 2012 and around 467.3 million euros in 2014. At the end of the 1990s, the public contributed 580,000 DM to the compensation fund for victims of National Socialism “Remembrance, Responsibility and Future” .

In 2007, a subsidiary was founded, the Public Facility Management GmbH, which takes care of property management and rental, office services, catering and events. Public Facility Management GmbH also provides its service for third-party customers.

In 2009, the public insurance company Braunschweig expanded its portfolio as part of a strategic cooperation with the Braunschweigische Landessparkasse to include all financial service products that are traditionally sold by banks and savings banks.

The company manages over 2.6 billion euros in capital investments and generates sales of over 400 million euros. It sells its products and services exclusively in the south-eastern part of Lower Saxony, the old Braunschweiger Land. Here the company, which offers all classic insurance and financial services products, achieves a market share of up to 50 percent, depending on the segment. The public insurance company Braunschweig looks after a total of around 1.3 million insurance contracts.
