The Hamburger Feuerkasse (full name: Hamburger Feuerkasse Versicherungs-AG ) is a damage insurance company in Hamburg . It was founded on November 30, 1676 and is the oldest insurance company in the world. In 2018 it had 163 employees and around 200,000 customers.

history

The first Hamburg “fire contract” was signed by an interest group of breweries in 1591. The affiliated breweries paid into one pot in order to be able to rebuild the breweries that had been damaged by a fire. This enabled burnt down breweries to continue to exist. Before that, a fire was a declaration of bankruptcy to the respective company.

In 1676 the Hamburger Feuerkasse was founded. The fire contracts existing in the city were summarized by the "Puncta der General Feur-Ordnungs-Cassa", which was passed on November 30th of that year. The council and citizens of Hamburg founded the world's first insurance company. The insurance area was within the city walls. Entry was free, but exit requires approval. The buildings were insured according to their actual value (market value). The maximum sum insured was 15,000 marks with a “one quart” deductible. Fixed contributions (ordinary allowance) and an unlimited obligation to make additional contributions (extraordinary allowance) were required. There was a reconstruction clause, according to which the building had to be rebuilt. The money could not be used for anything else.

Since 1753, leaving after joining was no longer permitted. From 1817 the compulsory insurance of every building was introduced. In 1833 new value insurance was introduced. If a building of the same type cost more than at the time of construction, the higher amount was paid. If the building was not restored, the compensation was reduced by a quarter (current fair value compensation ). In 1842 the Hamburg fire occurred , in which 20 percent of the building stock in Hamburg was destroyed. For compensation payments, the fire fund had to take out loans that were only repaid 40 years later. In 1867 the introduction of a contribution graded according to the risk involved. Explosion damage was considered to be included in the insurance, even if no fire started.

In 1928 the fire fund deputation (authority) was repealed. A board of directors was formed in the course of self-administration. The insurance sector was expanded to "Greater Hamburg" in 1937. The activities for the outsourced municipalities Geesthacht, Großhansdorf, Schmalenbeck (1953) and Cuxhaven (1955) were ended. Two years later, the Hamburger Feuerkasse became subject to fire protection tax.

In 1984 an equalization reserve was introduced and established, and in 1988 liability for surge damage caused by lightning was introduced. The Hamburger Mobiliar Feuerkasse was sold to the Provinzial-Versicherung Kiel in 1990 . The monopoly was lifted in 1994 and compulsory insurance ceased to exist. Monopoly insurance relationships became insurance contracts. The company was sold to a stock corporation and to the DBV Winterthur insurance group Wiesbaden. New products were offered: liability, tap water, construction, extended coverage, business interruption, sponge and longhorn beetle as well as rental loss insurance.

The Hamburger Feuerkasse has been integrated under the umbrella of Provinzial NordWest Holding AG since 2006 . It represents a property insurer that focuses on "home insurance". The company is mainly active in the city of Hamburg.

Hamburger Feuerkasse has also been offering tenants insurance protection since 2012. The accident insurance product is also offered. The customers who are looked after directly by the Hamburger Feuerkasse now also have the option of receiving full advice from their own permanent staff on site.
