Werner Knopp (born January 31, 1931 in Braunschweig ; † January 4, 2019 ) was a German legal scholar . From 1970 to 1974 he was rector of the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster and from 1977 to 1998 president of the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation in Berlin .

Life

The Lutheran baptized Werner Knopp was founded in 1931 as the son of an architect born in Brunswick and attended the Gaußschule . After graduating from high school, Knopp studied law at the TH Braunschweig and at the University of Heidelberg . In 1957 he was promoted to Dr. jur. doctorate and in 1968 he completed his habilitation under Wolfgang Hefermehl in law and political science . In the meantime he conducted historical studies at St Antony's College , Oxford from 1958 to 1960 .

He then moved to the Westphalian Wilhelms University, where he held the professorship for civil , commercial and economic law from 1969 to 1977 . From 1969 to 1980 he was the founding rector of the Institute for Foreign and International Private and Business Law . In addition, he was Rector of the University from 1970 to 1974 and President of the West German Rectors' Conference from 1974 to 1977 .

From July 1977 until his retirement in 1998 Werner Knopp was President of the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation.
