Hermann Parzinger
Hermann Parzinger (born March 12, 1959 in Munich ) is a German prehistorian and specialist in the culture of the Scythians . Since March 1, 2008, he has been president of the Berlin Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation .
Life
Parzinger was born in Munich in 1959. He studied from 1979 to 1985 at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich , at the Saarland University in Saarbrücken and at the University of Ljubljana ( Slovenia , 1982). His master's thesis he wrote in 1984 on "The position of the Ljubljana riparian settlements in the Eneolithic and Early Bronze Age culture system of the Middle Danube countries", 1985, he was at Georg Kossack on the chronology of the Late Hallstatt and Early La Tène doctorate . In 1985 he was awarded theTravel grant from the German Archaeological Institute (DAI), which took him through countries in the Mediterranean and the Middle East for a year.
From 1986 to 1990 Parzinger was university assistant at the chair for Prehistory and Protohistory at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich ( habilitation and private lecturer degree in 1991). From 1991 to 1994 he was Second Director of the Roman-Germanic Commission of the DAI in Frankfurt , and in 1992 he was re- qualified as a private lecturer at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt . In 1995 he was appointed founding director of the Eurasia Department of the German Archaeological Institute in Berlin. At the beginning of 2003, Hermann Parzinger succeeded Helmut Kyrieleis as President of the German Archaeological Institute (DAI) . He held this office until February 28, 2008. The ancient historian Hans-Joachim Gehrke became the new president of the DAI .
During his time as director (1995–2003) and later president (2003–2008) at the German Archaeological Institute, he carried out numerous excavations, including in the Celtiberian hilltop castle Castro Soto de Bureba ( Spain ) and in Neolithic to Bronze Age settlement areas near Kırklareli ( Turkey ), in the spätchalkolithischen to early dynastic metallurgy settlement of Arisman ( Iran ), in the Scythian shrine of Bajkara ( Kazakhstan ) in the Late Bronze Age and early iron Age settlement in the West Siberian forest steppe at Tschitscha ( Russia ) and in the multi-period cemetery of Suchanicha on Yenisei ( Russia). From 1997 to 1999 he headed an interdisciplinary research project of the VW Foundation on early tin extraction in Central Asia with excavations in Uzbekistan and Tajikistan . Parzinger became known worldwide through the discovery of a Scythian princely grave with almost 6000 gold objects in July 2001 near Aržan in the southern Siberian republic of Tuva . These significant finds were made in a cultural and historical context from July 6th to October 1st 2007 in the Martin-Gropius-Bau in Berlin as part of the exhibition “In the sign of the Golden Griffin. Royal Tombs of the Scythians ”. Another sensational find in the summer of 2006 was Parzinger's discovery of an ice mummy of a tattooed Scythian warrior in the permafrost zone of the Altai Mountains, including items of clothing (e.g. fur coat, felt cap, linen trousers) and a wooden composite bow.
Hermann Parzinger was unanimously elected President of the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation on June 8, 2007 , the largest German cultural institution. On March 1, 2008, he succeeded Klaus-Dieter Lehmann .
Parzinger is still partially connected to archaeological research in the new office. Among other things, he is currently at the Berlin Cluster of Excellence “Topoi. Formation and Transformation of Space and Knowledge in Ancient Civilizations ”and carries out excavations in the southeast of Kazakhstan. In another interdisciplinary BMBF research project, he deals with paleogenetic studies on the mobility of equestrian-nomadic population groups in Eurasia.
In May 2015 Parzinger was appointed one of the three founding directors of the Humboldt Forum in the Berlin Palace . On June 1, 2018, Hartmut Dorgerloh was appointed General Manager by the Board of Trustees of the Humboldt Forum, thus ending the founding directorship of Neil MacGregor , Horst Bredekamp and Hermann Parzinger.
He is a member of numerous committees, boards of trustees and advisory boards, u. a. in the councils of the universities of Frankfurt a. M. and Konstanz, on the board of trustees of the Hypo-Kunsthalle and the Deutsches Museum in Munich, on the program advisory board of the Art and Exhibition Hall of the Federal Republic of Germany in Bonn, on the board of trustees of the cultural foundation of the federal states and on the advisory board of a graduate school at the University of Kiel .
Parzinger is a member of the Research Center of Ancient Civilization of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences in Beijing , corresponding member of the Real Academia de la Historia in Madrid , full member of the humanities class of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences , member of the cultural studies section of the German Academy of Natural Scientists Leopoldina and corresponding member of the Archaeological Institute of America , the British Academy and the Russian Academy of Sciences.
In addition, Parzinger holds numerous other offices, for example he is President of the German Association for Archeology , Co-Chairman of the Culture Working Group in the Steering Committee of the Petersburg Dialogue , Spokesman for the German-Russian Museum Dialogue , Chairman of the General Assembly of the Forum Transregional Studies eV in Berlin and Chairman of the Advisory Board of the Center for Baltic and Scandinavian Archeology in Schleswig.
Hermann Parzinger is spokesman for the board of the German Digital Library .
In 2013 he was appointed to the Senate of the German National Foundation .
Private
Parzinger has been married for the second time to the archaeologist and LWL head of culture, Barbara Rüschoff- Parzinger, since June 16, 2017 .
Trivia
Hermann Parzinger is a judoka in his spare time . He is the bearer of the black belt (2nd Dan ) and participated in world and European championships. In both individual and team he was Berlin champion several times, most recently in 2009, 2010 and 2011 in the over 30s. In 2005, 2006 and 2009 he was fifth in the -81 kg class of the German championships over 30, in 2015 he won the bronze medal in the -90 kg class in Bad Belzig at the German championships over 30. As early as 1997 he was promoted to the regional league with the team of the Budo-Club Randori Berlin eV .

- In 2008 Hermann Parzinger was made an honorary citizen of his hometown Germering .
- On November 4, 2009, Parzinger received the Order of Friendship , the highest Russian honor for foreign citizens, from Russian President Dmitri Anatolyevich Medvedev at a ceremony in the Moscow Kremlin . He received it for his outstanding scientific achievements and his diverse engagements in German-Russian scientific and cultural relations, which have regularly brought him to Russia for decades.
- In 2011, the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences awarded Hermann Parzinger the Reuchlin Prize of the city of Pforzheim (named after the humanist Johannes Reuchlin , born in Pforzheim in 1455). The Heidelberg Academy justified this choice, among other things, with the fact that Hermann Parzinger had opened up new territory for archeology with his time-spanning and transnational research approach and had strengthened the importance of the humanities in public awareness.

- On October 4, 2012 Parzinger received the Great Cross of Merit with Star of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany
- 2013 receives Parzinger of the Academy of Sciences and Literature in Mainz the first ever Kalkhof Rose Academy Award . The € 25,000 prize for the humanities honors his services to prehistory and early history .
- In 2013 Parzinger was elected a member of the American Philosophical Society , the oldest scholarly society in the United States. In doing so, the company pays particular tribute to the collaboration he initiated with Russian archaeologists and his extensive publication activities as well as his outstanding work as a cultural manager.
- In 2014 he was elected Honorary Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences based in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
- On September 14, 2015 Parzinger was awarded the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic (Ordine al Merito della Repubblica Italiana - OMRI).
- In 2018 Parzinger received the order Gran Cruz de Alfonso X el Sabio (Civil Grand Cross of the Order of Alfonso X the Wise) from the Spanish government for outstanding services in the field of research, literature and art.
- On January 31, 2019, Parzinger was awarded the Marsilius Medal of the Marsilius Kolleg at Heidelberg University for promoting dialogue between scientific cultures.

So far he has published 20 monographs and over 230 scientific articles on archaeological topics from the Stone Age to the Iron Age to theoretical discussions and the history of research, and is the editor of various series of journals and monographs .
