Friederike Fless (born May 25, 1964 in Unna ) is a German classical archaeologist and, since 2011, the successor to Hans-Joachim Gehrke, the first woman to hold this position as President of the German Archaeological Institute .

Life

Fless attended the Geschwister-Scholl-Gymnasium in her hometown. From 1983 to 1992 she studied classical archeology , art history and ancient history at the University of Trier , the University of Würzburg and the University of Mainz . She received her doctorate in Mainz in 1992, the subject of the dissertation was “Sacrificial servants and cult musicians on historical reliefs from the city of Rome. Studies on iconography, function and naming ”. She then worked until 1993 as a research assistant and university assistant at the Archaeological Institute in Mainz. This was followed by the one-year travel grant from the German Archaeological Institute . From 1994 to 2000 she was a university assistant at the Institute for Classical Archeology at the University of Cologne . In 2000, he completed his habilitation in Cologne on the subject of “Considerations on the forms of appropriation and the function of Attic red-figure vases in the 4th century BC. Chr. ". Then Fless moved to the University of Leipzig , where she worked as a senior assistant at the Institute for Classical Archeology until 2003.

In 2003 Fless was appointed to a full professorship at the Free University of Berlin . Since 2004 she has been the spokesperson for the Interdisciplinary Center Old World (IZAW) of the FU. Between 2004 and 2008 she was chairwoman of the German Archaeological Association and since 2006 she has been a member of the central management of the German Archaeological Institute . Together with Wolfram Hoepfner she leads a project to research the ancient city wall of Messene , together with Yury Zaytsev the research of the Roman presence in Crimea , especially in Alma Kermen and Ak Kaya . Another of her projects runs under the name “The choice of the media of sepulkral representation in the Bosporan Empire as an indicator of cultural associations”. Furthermore, she is on the advisory board of the journal Archäologischer Anzeiger . It was from 2007 to February 2011, together with Christof Rapp (until 2009) spokeswoman from the German Research Foundation at the Free University of Berlin and the Humboldt University of Berlin settled excellence cluster Topoi .

Fless has been President of the German Archaeological Institute since April 1, 2011. She was therefore appointed honorary professor at the Free University of Berlin . Since November 2014 she has been a member of the Council for Information Infrastructures . On November 25, 2014, Fless received an honorary doctorate from the Faculty of Culture, Social Sciences and Education at the Humboldt University in Berlin for her outstanding achievements in science and science management .
