Thomas Bürger

Thomas Bürger (born July 24, 1953 in Arnsberg / Westf. ) Is a German philologist and librarian and honorary professor at the Technical University of Dresden . From 2003 to 2018 he was General Director of the Saxon State Library - Dresden State and University Library (SLUB).

Life

After graduating from high school Marianum in Warburg / Westf. In 1972, Bürger completed his studies in German, history and philosophy at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster in 1978 with the state examination. From 1979 to 1981 he was a scholarship holder of the German National Academic Foundation , since 1981 research assistant at the Herzog August Library in Wolfenbüttel . Participation in exhibitions in Wolfenbüttel, Zurich, Berlin and Weimar. He completed his training as a higher library service in 1984/85 in Wolfenbüttel, Braunschweig, Berlin and Cologne. In 1990 he received his doctorate with the thesis "Enlightenment in Zurich. The literary life of the city as reflected in the publishing house production by Orell, Geßner, Füßli & Comp." Since 1990, Bürger has been in charge of the "Collection of Historical Prints" department at the Herzog August Library in Wolfenbüttel.

In 1998 he took up the position of Deputy General Director at the Saxon State Library - Dresden State and University Library. From 2003 to July 31, 2018 he was its general manager.

In 2009 Bürger was appointed honorary professor at the Faculty of Linguistics, Literature and Cultural Studies at the Technical University of Dresden. The main focus of work is media and library history. From 2014 to 2018 he was a member of the Council for Information Infrastructures , until 2020 a member of the University Council of the TU Dresden . He is chairman of the board of trustees of the Anna Amalia Library Weimar eV and of the Saxon Library Association, founded in March 2019
