Marit Hansen (* 1969 ) is a German computer scientist and data protection expert . Since 2015 she's Data Protection Commissioner of the State of Schleswig-Holstein .

Live and act

In 1995 Hansen graduated from the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel with a diploma in computer science with a minor in medicine .

Since February 2008 she has been the deputy state commissioner for data protection in Schleswig-Holstein , and thus also deputy head of the Independent State Center for Data Protection (ULD), Kiel, after having worked there since 1995. The approach of data protection through technology and privacy-by-design, through which the ULD has achieved its current level of recognition, especially in the IT world, was significantly shaped and shaped by her.

Marit Hansen's work focuses on privacy enhancing technologies (PET) , identity management, anonymity, pseudonymity, data security, technical data protection as well as privacy by design and privacy by default. In 2007, she was appointed by the European Commission as an expert in the “Privacy & Technology” working group of the European Network and Information Security Agency (ENISA). Until 2008 she was the spokesperson for the PET (data protection technology) specialist group of the Society for Computer Science . As part of the recurring event “Data Protection - Law and Technology”, she gives lectures at the Institute for Computer Science at the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel. She was also a lecturer at the Multimedia Campus in Kiel and at the Kiel University of Applied Sciences . At ULD she was responsible for the EU-funded projects FIDIS , PRIME , PrimeLife and ABC4Trust .

In July 2015 she was appointed as the successor to Thilo Weichert as the head of the Independent State Center for Data Protection and unanimously re-elected by the Schleswig-Holstein State Parliament for six years in June 2020. Because a competitor is threatening a lawsuit and obtained an interim order from the Schleswig Administrative Court, the official appointment is pending.

Hansen has been a member of the Federal Government's Data Ethics Commission since July 2018 and of the Council for Information Infrastructures since November 2018 .

In April 2020, Marit Hansen was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Karlstad for her services in data protection-friendly system design .
