Helmut Bäumler

Helmut Bäumler (* 1948 in Mantel , Bavaria ) is a German lawyer and data protection expert .

Life

Helmut Bäumler studied law and political science in Bonn and initially settled in Munich as a lawyer after completing his doctorate . From 1980 to 1989 he then worked in Bonn as a consultant for the Federal Commissioner for Data Protection, with a focus on carrying out controls at the police authorities and federal intelligence services ( Section V).

From 1992 to 2004 Bäumler was the state data protection officer for the state of Schleswig-Holstein . During his tenure he operated the modernization of the state data protection law. At the same time, the office previously assigned to the President of the Schleswig-Holstein State Parliament was converted into an independent and independent authority. This was also expressed in the new name Independent State Center for Data Protection Schleswig-Holstein (ULD).

Bäumler has replaced the conventional, rather technology-hostile approach to data protection with an innovative perspective in which u. a. more data protection is to be achieved through technical innovation. Today, the ULD is internationally recognized for its pioneering projects in the field of technical data protection.

Bäumler's term of office as State Commissioner for Data Protection ended on August 31, 2004, and his deputy Thilo Weichert was his successor . Helmut Bäumler has since retired and lives in Italy .
