Thomas Grünewald (historian)

Thomas Grünewald (born September 18, 1959 in Merzig ) is a German ancient historian and science manager. He is a member of the SPD and was State Secretary in the Ministry for Innovation, Science and Research of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia from October 2014 to June 2017. He has been President of the Niederrhein University of Applied Sciences since March 2020 .

Life

Grünewald studied history and political science at the University of Trier from 1980 and graduated in 1986 with the first state examination in teaching at secondary level I / II with distinction. From 1988 to 2001 he was a research assistant / academic advisor at the University of Duisburg (later University of Duisburg-Essen ). In 1989 he was there with the theme Constantine Maximus Augustus: Domination propaganda in contemporary tradition doctorate . Grünewald also completed his habilitation in Duisburg in 1998 for ancient history and became a private lecturer.

In 2001 he went to the North Rhine-Westphalian Ministry of Science as a consultant for university policy and university planning and was there from 2002 to 2004 as a personal advisor to the ministers at the time, Gabriele Behler and Hannelore Kraft , then from 2004 to 2007 head of the department for strategic task planning and quality assurance. From 2007 Grünewald was full-time Vice President at the University of Potsdam . After the president of the university, Sabine Kunst , was sworn in as Brandenburg Minister of Science, Grünewald took over her position on February 23, 2011. He held this position until December 31, 2011. On May 1, 2012, he was appointed by the Minister of Science Sabine Kunst as a representative for the Lausitz university region. In this function, he prepared the establishment of a technical university in Lausitz from the merger of the Brandenburg Technical University Cottbus and the Lausitz University of Applied Sciences up to the introduction of the corresponding draft law in the Brandenburg state parliament . On November 1, 2012, NRW Minister of Science Svenja Schulze Grünewald appointed Head of the Department of Higher Education Law - EU and International Affairs - Institutional Research Funding at the Ministry for Innovation, Science and Research of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia , and from October 1, 2014 to October 30 , 2012 . June 2017 he was State Secretary there. During this period he was also a member of the Information Infrastructures Council . On July 18, 2019, the Niederrhein University of Applied Sciences elected him as its President. Grünewald will succeed Hans-Hennig von Grünberg on March 1, 2020.
