Joseph John Martin
Joseph John Martin (born November 21, 1833 in Williamston , Martin County , North Carolina , † December 18, 1900 in Tarboro , North Carolina) was an American politician . Between 1879 and 1881 he represented the state of North Carolina in the US House of Representatives .
Career
Joseph Martin first attended the Williamston Academy . After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1859, he began to work in this profession. He also became a Martin County attorney. Between 1868 and 1878 he served as the district attorney in North Carolina's Second Judicial District.
Politically, Martin became a member of the Republican Party . In 1876 he was a delegate to the Republican National Convention in Cincinnati , where Rutherford B. Hayes was nominated as a candidate for president. In the congressional election of 1878 , Martin was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the first constituency of North Carolina , where he succeeded Democrat Jesse Johnson Yeates , whom he defeated in the election, on March 4, 1879 . Yeates objected to the outcome of this election, but it was not upheld until January 29, 1881, a few weeks before the regular end of the legislative term of the Congress . On that day, Martin had to resign his mandate to Yeates, who then ended the legislative period by March 3 of the same year.
After leaving the US House of Representatives, Joseph Martin practiced law again. In 1897 he became a postman in Tarboro. He held this office until his death on December 18, 1900.
