Richard N. Hackett

Richard Nathaniel Hackett (born December 4, 1866 in Wilkesboro , North Carolina , †  November 22, 1923 in Statesville , North Carolina) was an American politician . Between 1907 and 1909 he represented the state of North Carolina in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Richard Hackett attended Wilkesboro High School and then studied until 1887 at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill . After a subsequent law degree and his admission as a lawyer in 1888, he began to work in Wilkesboro in this profession. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party .

Between 1890 and 1923 he was his party's district chairman in Wilkes County . During the same period he served on the Democratic state board in North Carolina. Hackett was Mayor of Wilkesboro from 1894 to 1896. In 1889, he represented his home state at the celebrations marking the 100th inauguration of President George Washington in New York City . In 1896 he ran unsuccessfully for Congress .

In the congressional elections of 1906 Hackett was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the eighth constituency of North Carolina , where he succeeded Edmond Spencer Blackburn on March 4, 1907 . Since he was not confirmed in 1908, he could only complete one legislative period in Congress until March 3, 1909 . After leaving the US House of Representatives, Hackett practiced as a lawyer in North Wilkesboro . He died in Statesville on November 22, 1923.
