Lawrence Webb "Larry" Kissell (born January 31, 1951 in Pinehurst , North Carolina ) is an American politician . Between 2009 and 2013 he represented the state of North Carolina in the US House of Representatives . In the 2012 congressional election, he was defeated by his Republican competitor Richard Hudson .

Career

Larry Kissell attended East Montgomery High School in Biscoe until 1969 . He then studied economics at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem until 1973 . He worked in a hosiery factory for 27 years. Since 2001 he has been a social studies teacher at East Montgomery High School .

Politically, Kissell joined the Democratic Party . In 2006 he ran unsuccessfully for Congress . In the 2008 congressional election , he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the eighth constituency of North Carolina , where he succeeded Robin Hayes on January 3, 2009 . After a re-election in the 2010 elections - he prevailed with 53 percent of the vote against Republican Harold Johnson - he lost the 2012 election; his mandate ended when his Republican successor Richard Hudson took office on January 3, 2013. Kissell was a member of the Agriculture Committee and the Armed Forces Committee, as well as three subcommittees.

He is married and lives privately in Biscoe.
