James Strudwick Smith

James Strudwick Smith (born September 8, 1787 in Hillsboro , North Carolina , †  December 7, 1852 in Chapel Hill , North Carolina) was an American politician . Between 1817 and 1821 he represented the state of North Carolina in the US House of Representatives .

Career

James Smith first attended a private school and then graduated from Hillsboro Academy . After a subsequent medical degree at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia and his license as a doctor in 1818, he began to work in Orange County in this profession.

Politically, Smith was a member of the Democratic Republican Party . In the congressional election of 1816 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the eighth constituency of North Carolina , where he succeeded Samuel Dickens on March 4, 1817 . After re-election, he was able to complete two legislative terms in Congress until March 3, 1821 . From 1819 he was chairman of the Committee on Accounts .

In 1820 Smith was no longer nominated for re-election by his party. In the following years he practiced as a doctor again. Between 1821 and 1822 he was a member of the North Carolina House of Representatives . In 1835 he was a delegate to a meeting to revise the state constitution. James Smith died on December 7, 1852 near Chapel Hill.
