Mel Watt

Melvin Luther "Mel" Watt (born August 26, 1945 in Steele Creek , Mecklenburg County , North Carolina ) is an American politician . From 1993 to 2014 he represented the state of North Carolina in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Mel Watt attended York Road High School in Charlotte until 1963 . He then studied until 1967 at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill . After a subsequent law degree at Yale University and his admission to the bar in 1970, he began to work in his new profession. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . From 1985 to 1987 he was a member of the North Carolina Senate .

In the 1992 congressional election , Watt was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the 12th constituency of North Carolina, which was re-established after a 30-year hiatus , where he took his seat on January 3, 1993. After ten re-elections, he exercised his mandate in Congress until January 6, 2014. Most recently he was a member of the Finance Committee and the Justice Committee . After he was confirmed as the new head of the Federal Housing Finance Agency by the US Senate with 57:41 votes , he resigned his mandate, which fell to his party colleague Alma Adams after the by-election on November 4, 2014 .

Mel Watt has two children with his wife Eulada. The family lives in Charlotte privately.
