James G. Martin (1988)

James Grubbs Martin (born December 11, 1935 in Savannah , Georgia ) is an American politician ( Republican Party ). He was the 70th  governor of the state of North Carolina .

Early years and political advancement

James Martin was born in Georgia and raised in South Carolina . He attended Davidson College until 1957 and then studied chemistry at Princeton University . Between 1960 and 1972 he temporarily taught chemistry at Davidson College.

His political career began in 1966 when he was County Commissioner in Mecklenburg County . He held this office, parallel to his teaching activity, until 1972. He also founded a new commission, consisting of representatives from nine districts, which discussed and decided on common concerns. In 1973 James Martin was elected to the United States House of Representatives, where he served on various committees until 1984. In 1984 he was nominated by his party as a candidate for the gubernatorial election. With 54.3 percent of the vote, he prevailed against Rufus L. Edmisten , the democratic Attorney General of the state.

North Carolina Governor

After winning the election, he took up his new office on January 1, 1985 and, thanks to the successful re-election in 1988, held it until January 1, 1993. During this time, he continued the successful school policy of his predecessor and successor Jim Hunt . The road network was further developed and improved, and it also promoted state trade. As a railroad enthusiast, he supported efforts to restore greater importance to passenger trains in North Carolina.

After the end of his tenure, he withdrew from politics. He became Chairman of the Board of Directors of the James Cannon Research Center at the Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte .
