Richard Spaight Donnell
Richard Spaight Donnell (born September 20, 1820 in New Bern , North Carolina , † June 3, 1867 ibid) was an American politician . Between 1847 and 1849 he represented the state of North Carolina in the US House of Representatives .
Career
Richard Spaight Donnell was a grandson of Congressman and Governor Richard Spaight (1758-1802). He attended the New Bern Academy and then studied at Yale College and until 1839 at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill . After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1840, he began to work in this profession in New Bern.
Politically, Donnell joined the Whig Party . In the congressional election of 1846 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the eighth constituency of North Carolina , where he succeeded Henry Selby Clark on March 4, 1847 . Since he refused to run again in 1848, he was only able to complete one legislative period in Congress until March 3, 1849 . This was shaped by the events of the Mexican-American War .
After retiring from the US House of Representatives, Donnell practiced as a lawyer in Washington, North Carolina. In 1861 he was a delegate at the meeting at which the withdrawal of his state from the Union was decided. In 1862 and 1864 he was a member of the North Carolina House of Representatives and its president. In 1865 Donnell took part as a delegate to a meeting to revise the state constitution. He died on June 3, 1867 in New Bern.
