Washington is a city in the US state of North Carolina . It is the administrative seat of Beaufort County and is part of the Inner Banks . For 2006 the population was estimated at 10,060 inhabitants. The next major city is Greenville , which is about 20 miles to the west.

When it was founded in 1776, Washington was the first city to be named after George Washington , the first President of the USA.

Demographic data

At the 2000 census, Washington had 9,583 people in 3,968 households and 2,468 families. The racial the population is composed of 51.8 percent white population, 45.5 percent African American, 0.5 percent Asian American, and other smaller or more groups. 2.72 percent of the population are Hispanics .

Children under the age of 18 live in 28.6% of the 3,698 households, married couples in 37.7%, singles in 21.2% and 37.8% are not family households. 33.5% of all households consist exclusively of a single person and 15.3% are single people over 65 years of age. The average household size is 2.30 people, that of families 2.93.

In relation to the city as a whole, the population is composed of 24.7% residents under 18 years of age, 8.6% between 18 and 24 years of age, 24.5% between 25 and 44 years of age, 22.6% between 45 and 64 years of age 19.6% over 65 years. The median is 40 years. About 58.5% of the population over the age of 18 is female.

The median income of a household is USD 22,057 and that of a family is USD 30,280. The per capita income is $ 14,319. About 28.7% of the population and 23.3% of families live below the poverty line.

Important roads through Washington are US Route 264 , which runs through the city from west to east, and US Route 17 , which runs through the city from north to south and crosses the Pamlico River .
