Murray Hamilton (born March 24, 1923 in Washington , North Carolina , † September 1, 1986 ibid) was an American actor who was best known for roles in the classic films Sharks of the City , The Graduation and Jaws .

life and career

Hamilton was born in Beaufort County , North Carolina in 1923 . He showed an interest in acting from a very early age. After he was not drafted for military service due to poor hearing performance, he moved to New York City at the age of 19 to pursue an acting career. In the 1950s and 1960s he predominantly took on roles in television series and played on Broadway , where he was repeatedly on stage with Henry Fonda . For his role in the play Absence of a Cello , he was nominated for the Tony Award for Best Supporting Actor in 1965, but lost to Jack Albertson .

At the end of the 1950s, his first major supporting roles in film productions followed, where he embodied in particular rough or cynical characters. He starred in several successful films, such as the bartender in Anatomy of a Murder (1959) with James Stewart and as a wealthy billiard player in Sharks of the City (1961) at the side of Paul Newman . In Mike Nichols' The Graduation (1967) he starred as Anne Bancroft's betrayed husband, Mr. Robinson. Probably his best-known role was that of Amity Island Mayor Larry Vaughn in Steven Spielberg's thriller Jaws . Hamilton also appeared in the less successful sequel Jaws 2 and should also take over his role in the fourth and final part of the Jaws - The Reckoning series , but died before filming began.

One of his last roles was that of Big Daddy Hollingsworth on the sitcom Golden Girls . Hamilton died in 1986 at the age of 63 of complications from lung cancer and is buried in Oakdale Cemetery in his hometown of Washington, North Carolina. He was married to Terri DeMarco from 1953 until his death and the couple had a son named David.
