Jack Albertson
Jonathan "Jack" Albertson (born June 16, 1907 in Malden , Massachusetts , † November 25, 1981 in Hollywood , Los Angeles , California ) was an American actor , dancer and musician . As a performer, the artist has received all prestigious awards such as the Oscar , the Emmy and the Tony Award .
Life
Jack Albertson was born to Jewish parents. His mother was a Russian immigrant, the father a Polish immigrant. His older sister, Mabel Albertson , also worked as an actress. After high school , he went to New York City to become an actor. With no money or no job, he had to spend the night on the subway in winter and in Central Park in summer . His first job in show business was in a street troupe "the Dancing Verselle Sisters".
It was through this group that he found his way to Broadway . Back then he played in: Top Banana , The Cradle Will Rock , Make Mine Manhattan , Show Boat , Boy Meets Girl , Girl Crazy , Meet the People , The Sunshine Boys (for this role he got a Tony Award nomination for Best Actor) , and The Subject Was Roses (which won the Tony Award). For the film adaptation of the play, he won an Oscar for best supporting actor in 1969. He also worked for the radio programs Just Plain Bill and The Jack Albertson Comedy Show . In 1947 he began his film career.
Albertson died at the age of 74 while filming My Body, My Child . His body was cremated and the ashes were scattered over the Pacific Ocean.
