Jaws - Billing (Original title: Jaws: The Revenge ) is an American horror film from 1987. Directed by Joseph Sargent . It is the third sequel to Steven Spielberg's Jaws . Ellen Brody ( Lorraine Gary ) retired to the Bahamas after her youngest son was killed by a shark. But even here she does not find the peace she longed for.

action

Ellen Brody and her son, police officer Sean Brody, live in the east coast resort of Amity. Shortly before Christmas, Sean drives his service boat to the harbor entrance and is mauled by a great white shark without anyone noticing. Ellen moves to the Bahamas to live with her second son Michael, who is doing marine biology research there. Far from Amity, she wants to leave the past behind. After getting to know the pilot Hoagie, some peace seems to have returned - but soon the great white shark that killed Sean reappears. Without saying anything to his mother, Michael wants to research the behavior of the shark. But then there is another attack by the shark on the beach in front of Ellen's eyes, which causes her to take the boat out to sea to face her enemy.

Together with Michael, Hoagie and Michael's research colleague Jake, Ellen succeeds in stuffing the receiver of a transmitter into the throat of the shark, but Jake is pulled under the water by the animal. With the transmitter, Michael repeatedly gives the shark violent electric shocks until it explodes due to the electrical impulses in a strong collision with the boat. Shortly afterwards, Jake comes back to the surface seriously injured and everyone can reach the mainland.

Alternative ending

In a version made for television there is an alternate ending: the shark doesn't explode when Ellen rams it with the boat, but is impaled, pulls the boat into the depths, and Jake no longer emerges from the water. This ending is generally considered to be more logical, as the shark's explosion and Jake's survival, as depicted in the theatrical version, are not logical.

criticism

The lexicon of international films wrote: “An extraordinarily thin, fourth infusion of a film success with several lengths and some involuntarily comical elements resulting from the inadequate script.” Overall, the reviews were devastating. On Rotten Tomatoes , the film got an extremely rare 0% of positive reviews (22 reviews were evaluated). In summary, the film was described as "illogical and low-tension". Entertainment Weekly put the film on its list of the 25 worst sequel films. The readers of the movie magazine Empire put the film on the list of the 50 worst films of all time.

Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times gave the film 0 out of 4 stars. He called him "stupid and incompetent". He criticizes Ellen for having memories that she couldn't have had (because she wasn't present in these scenes). It was also criticized that the shark should have swum 2000 kilometers in less than three days, that it seeks personal revenge on members of a certain family and roars like a lion.

Others

The "low" box office (compared to the other two successors and the original) was around $ 52 million.
