A Leap in the Bowl (Original: Hysterical ) is an American horror comedy directed by Chris Bearde from 1983.
action
Cape Hellview, Oregon in 1882. During a violent storm, the unfaithful lighthouse keeper Captain Howdy awaits a sailing ship with his wife. However, this leads to a dispute with his jealous lover Venetia, who in boundless fury is responsible for the death of the captain and, through sabotage at the beacon , the death of the sailors' crew, only to plunge herself into the widely visible sea mark with suicidal intent. Before that, the confused woman gave her soul to the flare.
100 years later, the wealthy and successful novelist Frederic Lansing, ghostwriter under the pseudonym "Casper Brown", comes to the small coastal town with a new identity in order to find peace and inspiration for a serious, non-commercial literary work apart from his criticized books. The frustrated writer soon meets the bizarre and superstitious residents of the small town, including Ralph, who warns the newcomer about the damned residents of the city. Despite this strange occurrence, the stranger, who constantly leads monologues , travels to his domicile, the lighthouse of the sleepy place that has been uninhabited for generations , where the attractive realtor Kate is already waiting for him. A mutual sympathy develops between the two.
Unfortunately, Casper's presence leads to Venetia or her evil spirit awakening to new life. The annoyed ghost apparition initially feels disturbed by a local boat driver so that she orders her lover Captain Howdy to rise from the dead to serve her as a willless tool. The gigantic undead will henceforth satisfy their thirst for revenge. Her first destination is the tourist guide whose death she wishes. However, the contract killing fails due to the inability of the living dead man. Howdy's lifeless body is found at some point and inspected by two scientists. The city fathers ask for professional help and hire the incompetent adventurer and occult expert Prof. Dr. Paul Batton and his fearless assistant Fritz.
Meanwhile, the spirit of Venetia feels relaxed and strong again. A little later, she calls Howdy, who is believed to be dead, who is supposed to kill all residents of the city on her behalf. He commits atrocities in the name of his ex-lover and decimates the number of the living, who in turn return as undead, although they are not perceived as such despite their external appearance. Meanwhile, Kate and Casper get closer, but their love is suddenly interrupted when Venetia claims Casper for herself, curses him little by little and takes possession of him in a strange way. The obsessed writer consequently immediately suspects changes that he cannot explain. He therefore turns to Prof. Batton and his assistants for help. The research of the two crazy experts finally shows that Captain Howdy and a large number of the locals are undead who can be identified by several characteristics. The events are directly related to the lighthouse in which the author is quartered.
At the same time, the local eccentric Ralph suspects that Frederic has been attacked by a cruel curse that only Kate can lift with her love. Meanwhile, Venetia plans to make the unsuspecting Casper her new lover at night. However, the occult experts together with Kate prevent this by successfully performing an exorcism at the end of the film . Afterwards, with the help of Ralph Venetia, a huge explosion is finally stopped. Captain Howdy had previously been rendered harmless. In the final scene of the film, Dr. Paul Batton, Fritz, Kate and Frederic on a sofa in the sea when suddenly Ralph appear out of nowhere in the presence of Captain Howdy and Venetia and demand a happy ending. Frederic reveals his real name to Kate, the two find each other and kiss.

Reviews
The lexicon of international films wrote that the film was a “horror film parody with some successful ideas.” The numerous film quotes would “provide variety” , but also contribute to the “utter mess” .
