Thomas Anthony Del Ruth (born May 1, 1942 in Beverly Hills , Los Angeles County , California ) is an American cinematographer .

Life

Thomas Del Ruth is the son of director Roy Del Ruth and actress Winnie Lightner . He studied from 1961 to 1962 at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg and, after he had finished his military service as a paratrooper in the United States Army , from 1964 to 1965 at the University of Southern California . He then temporarily found a job in the mail room at Walt Disney Studios. After meeting Saul Halprin, head of the camera department at 20th Century Fox , he was hired by Fox and worked as a camera assistant on the television series Batman in 1966 and by Joseph MacDonald in his work on the drama Gunboat on the Yangtze River .

He made his debut as chief cameraman with two episodes of the television series Mrs. Columbo , published in 1979 . Del Ruth's career peaked in the 1980s when he appeared in well-known films such as The Breakfast Club , Stand by Me and Look Who's Talking! was responsible for the camera.

Since 1981 Del Ruth has been married to Patricia West-Del Ruth. They have two sons together: Matthew A. Del Ruth and Sean W. Del Ruth also work as cameramen. He is now retired with his wife in Bend , Oregon .
