action

When the Loskis move into the house across from the Baker family in the mid-1950s, second grader Juli Baker falls in love with her new neighbor, Bryce Loski. Due to a mishap, she even sees herself cheated out of her first kiss with him. The shy Bryce tries to keep his lively and direct neighbor at a distance for the next few years. Five years later, he devised a plan to finally avoid the rapprochement of July by meeting her greatest "enemy" Sherry Stalls. But when Sherry learns that it is only being used, she ends her relationship with Bryce, and Juli begins to raise her hopes again.

Months later, Bryce's grandfather Chet Duncan moves in with the Bakers. He is the only one in the family who recognizes Juli's special, spontaneous and lovable nature. Especially after July bravely but unsuccessfully protested against the felling of an old, large plane tree with a sit-down in the tree and thus making it into the local news, the two became close friends. As a result of these events, Bryce is beginning to become interested in July too. But as he gradually falls in love with her, Juli is soon unsure of her feelings towards him - especially after overhearing Bryce making fun of her disabled uncle Daniel with a friend. Then she doesn't want to have anything more to do with him.

Following a school event where Bryce can't stop thinking and staring at July, he wants to kiss her awkwardly and without warning. Juli is confused, runs away and lets her family deny her for the next few days when Bryce wants to speak to her. The following day, Bryce digs a hole in the Bakers' front yard and plants a plane tree in it. Now July recognizes Bryce's honest and amicable intentions and helps him plant the tree.
