action

The moderately successful local New York journalist Sarah Huttinger actually wants to marry the lawyer Jeff Daly. She visits her hometown Pasadena for her sister Annie's wedding. The rumor has been circulating here for decades that the scandalous story on which the novel and film The Graduate Examination is based actually happened in Pasadena. Assumptions about the identity of the families involved at the time are an integral part of the local gossip and small talk culture.

Plagued by doubts about her own feelings towards her fiancé and her family, Sarah finds out that around nine months before she was born, her long-dead mother had a brief affair with today's internet millionaire Beau Burroughs, who in turn had a secret affair with her mother , Sarah's grandmother Katharine.

Sarah flies to San Francisco, where she finds Beau Burroughs. He confirms the affairs with her mother and grandmother, but convinces them that they can not be their father because of a sports injury ( blunt testicular trauma ). Attracted by his charisma, Sarah spends a night with him. Then she realizes that she cannot imagine a relationship with him and goes back to Jeff Daly, who forgives her for her affair. Reviews

The critics were neither enthusiastic nor repulsed by the film. Roger Ebert judged: “This is not a great film, but it is handsome and good for a few laughs.” James Berardinelli commented similarly: The film offers “a few laughs in connection with good depictions of Costner and MacLaine, but that's about it all arrows in his quiver. It's a waste of time, but it doesn't hurt. ” Tvspielfilm.de judged:“ Rob Reiner's love dance (“Harry and Sally”) relies on puns and bizarre marginal observations. Shirley MacLaine, the cheerful grandmother, shoots the bird. Brisk family madness of the mildly frivolous kind ”. The lexicon of international film speaks of a "perfectly staged" as well as a "brilliant" comedy of "sometimes breathtaking malice", which is carried by "outstanding actors".
