action

Ben Jordan is a comedy writer and has been married to crossword puzzle designer Katie for 15 years . But the marriage is deadlocked: They live more in rituals, mainly for the sake of their children Erin and Josh. While Ben accuses his wife of lacking spontaneity , she claims that her husband is under-responsible. When the children leave for summer vacation camp, the couple decide to split up.

But the separation is harder for both of them than they want to admit: Little things keep popping up that make them think of previous events. When parents are due to visit the holiday camp, the two get together again so as not to spoil the children's holidays. It is also inevitable that they see each other now and then. Katie even has an affair with a dentist, but can't really break away from Ben. When the children are finally due to be picked up at the agreed collection point at the end of the vacation, Ben and Katie decide to give their marriage another chance.

Reviews

James Berardinelli wrote on ReelViews that the film could be called " Harry and Sally 15 Years Later ". The film shows what happens when everyday routines and minor differences of opinion in marriage lead to an insurmountable gap. The film is mostly insightful and intelligent, only the end is not plausible. It is manipulative, but in a clever way it is another twist on the robust American creed of happiness. Berardinelli praised the dialogues, but criticized the not particularly carefully elaborated supporting characters, sometimes sunk to farce.

The editorial staff of prisma praised the lack of false pathos and the representations.

The editors of the Berliner Zeitung BZ wrote that the comedy was Rob Reiner's worst film and described it as “a piece of work”.

The lexicon of international films wrote that the film was a "winged vehicle for the two central stars".

Awards

Colleen Rennison was nominated for the Young Artist Award in 2000.

Eric Clapton's theme song Get Lost was nominated for a Golden Satellite Award in 2000.

Ronnie Specter was nominated for the Hollywood Makeup Artist and Hair Stylist Guild Award in 2000.

The German Film and Media Evaluation FBW in Wiesbaden awarded the film the title valuable.

background

Filming took place in Los Angeles , Venice and Culver Studios in California . Production costs were estimated at 50 million US dollars .

Film music

In the making-of available on DVD, director Rob Reiner says that he really wanted to win Eric Clapton for the soundtrack. He sent Clapton a rough cut version of the film and a few weeks later got a demo tape from Clapton, on which Clapton had recorded some songs that were ultimately used in the film. Can also be heard is Clapton's already in the 1970s captured Wonderful tonight and the piece Classical Gas by Mason Williams . The other film music comes from Marc Shaiman , who also composed the soundtracks for many other films by Rob Reiner.
