action

Oren Little is a selfish real estate agent in New York who withdrew from his fellow man after the death of his wife and only wants to sell his noble parents' house and then retire. Therefore, he temporarily lives in his own apartment building, making life difficult for his tenants there.

One day his son Luke unexpectedly appears at the door and confronts him with the fact that he is the grandfather of ten-year-old Sarah, who Luke wants to bring him to live because he has to go to prison for a few months.

Since Oren is obviously overwhelmed with the situation, the neighbor Leah takes on the granddaughter. Leah is a widow and is trying to earn some money as a bar singer. Oren finds help from her, and the more time he spends with his granddaughter and Leah, the more he experiences feelings such as compassion and love again. Nevertheless, he tries to bring the child together with his birth mother, but that doesn't work; Sarah has never seen her mother and, due to her drug addiction, she is unable to take on the responsibility for bringing up her daughter.

Oren finds a good lawyer for his son who can reach a retrial and prove Luke's innocence. Now Sarah can go back to her father. After Oren has sold his house, he is about to leave for Vermont, where he actually wanted to retire. But he admits his love for Leah and stays with her.

Reviews

  • Cinema : Over-the-top comedy that too often gets wrong with the tone and also disappoints in terms of performance.
  • Die Welt : Reiner's old work is the cinematic equivalent of the beige pensioner jacket: colorless, predictable and a rather sad sight.
