Frances Sternhagen
Frances Hussey Sternhagen (born January 13, 1930 in Washington, DC ) is an American film and stage actress .
Life
Born and raised in Washington DC as the daughter of John M. Sternhagen and Gertrude S. Wyckoff, Sternhagen began her professional career as an art teacher before she was on stage for the first time with a small theater group. Her way led her to Broadway , where she took part in countless plays. She was nominated four times for a Tony Award , twice she won this award for her performance in The Good Doctor and The Heiress .
She made her film debut in 1956, at the age of 26, in an episode of the television series Studio One . In 1982 she won for her role as Dr. Marian Lazarus in Outland - Planet of the Damned a Saturn Award for Best Supporting Actress . From 1986 to 1993 she played the role of overprotective mother Esther Clavin (mother of the main character played by John Ratzenberger ) in the US sitcom Cheers . She played another major role in the film Last Rest on the side of Morgan Freeman and John Lithgow . She gained fame in old age through her role as Millicent Carter in Emergency Room , a character that Sternhagen impersonated in 21 episodes. In ten episodes of the television series Sex and the City , she was seen as Bunny MacDougal , the mother of Charlotte's first husband. From the second season of The Closer , she impersonated the mother of the main character Deputy Chief Brenda Leigh Johnson, played by Kyra Sedgwick, in individual episodes until her serial death .
Private
In 1956 she married the film actor Thomas A. Carlin (1928-1991), with whom she was married until his death on May 6, 1991. The couple had three sons and three daughters. Four of their children, Amanda , Paul, Peter and Tony , are also actors.
German dubbing voice
Actress Hannelore Minkus regularly appears as the main spokesperson for the German versions of Sternhagen's film roles .
