During a trip with his family to a hut in the forest, the burglar alarm goes off the first night and Strieber sees a face in front of the door. He turns on the light, but wakes up his son and two other family friends, but his wife continues to sleep.

Because of this, they go back to New York City and life is normal. However, Strieber finds that his work and private life is infested with the recurring nightmares and visions of strange beings, aliens , blue doctors and bugs. This upsets his son and puts a strain on his marriage.

After an incident in their house, in which Strieber is so convinced that aliens are in the apartment, he takes his gun and almost shoots his wife. He's doing therapy .

The therapy confirms that he may have been abducted by unknown beings and that experiments have been carried out on him. He's doing group therapy.

Eventually, realizing that he must face his visions, whether they are real or not, he returns to the hut where most of the incidents occurred.
