Tales from the Crypt (English title: Tales from the Crypt ) is an American horror - television series , which (and later also in Germany - - greatly reduced from 1989 to 1996 in the US Sat.1 ) was broadcast. 93 episodes were produced, which were divided into seven seasons. The series is based on the comic series Tales from the Crypt from the 1950s , which was published by William M. Gaines at EC Comics . Aside from Tales from the Crypt , stories from the horror comic series Haunt of Fear and Vault of Horror , also published by EC Comics , and occasionally from the crime comic series Crime SuspenStories and Shock SuspenStories , served as templates.

The Short Stories series was one of the few that could be released without review by the FCC because it was distributed on the HBO cable network . This enabled the producers to process content in the series that would otherwise be censored , such as violence, drug and sex scenes.

Production of the series began in the United States, filmed in California , was produced in later episodes in England and then included stories revolving around British characters.

Episodes

John Kassir at a horror convention with a picture of the "cryptkeeper" in his hand.

Originally, Tales from the Crypt was conceived as a movie that should contain three episodes. Since earlier horror episode films such as Weird Shadow Lights , The Weird Crazy Witching Hour or Cat's Eye were only moderately successful economically, it was decided to produce for television.

Each of the individual stories began and ended with a moderation by the Cryptkeeper , a cleverly chattering, half-decayed zombie that was realized as a puppet trick . The appearance of the doll was roughly based on the facial features of her voice actor John Kassir. In the German version, the Cryptkeeper was initially dubbed by Günther Jerschke (until the middle of the first season), then by Dieter Memel , then by Tommi Piper .

The stories often follow a typical fairy tale - pattern , will be punished according to the immoral behavior. The punishment is usually unusually gruesome and very unexpected. Thus, the stories are z. B. comparable to Hansel and Gretel , one of the Grimms fairy tales , in which an angry old woman is thrown into an oven as punishment. Violence is pointedly used here as a means of portraying behavior or the resulting punishment and, despite the sometimes drastic effects, is never an end in itself.

Many of the episodes had famous guest stars such as Tom Hanks , Roger Daltrey , Tim Roth , Bill Paxton , Daniel Craig , Whoopi Goldberg , Michael J. Fox , Demi Moore , Ute Lemper , Joe Pesci , Brad Pitt , Steve Buscemi , Tim Curry and also Arnold Schwarzenegger . Some of the guest stars also directed the episode themselves.

Many well-known directors were involved in the series. So staged Gary Fleder and William Malone two episodes that directors Richard Donner , Robert Zemeckis , Russell Mulcahy and Stephen Hopkins three or more.

Particularly noteworthy is the episode You, Murderer , which was one of the first film productions to use computer-generated actors. At the beginning of the episode, Alfred Hitchcock appeared in a cameo and the lead role was played by Humphrey Bogart . Another highlight of the episode is the appearance of Isabella Rossellini , who, for the first and only time, performed a parody of her mother Ingrid Bergman , who she looks increasingly like.

Offshoot

Feature films

Three feature films were made based on the series:

  • Demon Knight ( Demon Knight ) of 1995: The film was very successful at the box office and played 21 million dollars in theaters one.
  • Bordello of Blood ( Bordello of Blood ) 1996: The film had less success: he played only about 5 million US dollars in US cinemas.
  • The ritual - Under the spell of evil ( Tales from the Crypt presents: Revelation / Ritual ) from 2001: The film is a free remake of I Followed a Zombie from 1943. Since the test screenings were miserable, the framework with the Cryptkeeper - as well any other reference to the series - removed and the film was only released on DVD.

References can also be found in Three Paths to Death from 1992 (directed by Richard Donner, Tom Holland, Robert Zemeckis), Creepshow from 1982 (directed by George A. Romero ) and its sequels Creepshow 2 (1987) and Creepshow 3 (2006) and the television series Tales from the Darkside, which was broadcast from 1984 to 1988 .

Animated series

The series Tales from the Crypt (orig. Tales from the Cryptkeeper ) was released as an animated series for television in 1993, which was similar in style to the real film adaptations , but without adopting their explicit elements such as violence, drugs and sex.

A children's game show called Secrets of the Cryptkeeper's Haunted House is also an offshoot.

After the cancellation of the original series, the series Perversions of Science was created in 1997 , which featured science fiction instead of horror , but was discontinued in the same year.
