prolog

Billy loves horror comics. So he is all the angrier when his father forbids him to read them and throws away his favorite comic called Creepshow . That same night the creep appears in front of Billy's window, who shows him a real world of horror. The creep tells him five macabre horror stories from the comic, which are about vengeful zombies , bloodthirsty monsters , merciless insects and an eerie plant from outer space ...

Father's Day ( Father's Day )

Aunt Bedelia has been returning to the scene of her crime every year on Father's Day for seven years. She killed her father, who was in a wheelchair and bullied her. His last words were: I want my Father's Day cake! . This year the father will rise from his grave to take bloody revenge and get what he has asked for for seven years: his cake. First he kills Bedelia, then he begins killing his remaining greedy and scheming heirs. In the end, he beheads his granddaughter Sylvia and sticks candles on her head. He ends the episode with the words: "Happy Father's Day!"

Mondgestein ( The Lonesome Death of Jordy Verrill )

A small meteor strikes the farmer Jordy Verrill's garden. He imagines getting a lot of money for it and examines the strange stone. After the first touch with the fingertips, a disgusting green growth spreads on his body and in the surrounding area. When he wants to take a bath to wash off the grass, his father's ghost appears in the mirror, which makes it clear to him that he will die if he takes a bath now. Jordy replies that he's almost dead anyway. When he leaves the bathroom, his entire apartment is already overgrown with grass. Eventually he commits suicide by shooting himself.

Video Games, Alternate Title Washed Away ( Something to Tide You Over )

Richard wants revenge on his own wife and on Harry, her lover. To do this, he digs the two up to their necks on the beach and waits for the tide. When Richard wants to get rid of the corpses, he is horrified to discover that they are no longer buried in the sand, but instead hunt him down as the undead and want to give him the same fate as he does them. They break into his house and take him to the beach, where they bury him and wait for the tide. Richard firmly believes that he can hold his breath long enough. The episode leaves open whether he is right.

Expedition into the Animal Kingdom ( The Crate )

Henry is annoyed by his wife Wilma because he is suppressed by her. Professor Stanley opens an old box from 1834 from the Arctic with Mike, the university caretaker . As soon as it is opened, a bloodthirsty, ape-like monster pulls the caretaker and one of the students into the box. With his nerves at the end, Stanley tells his friend Henry about the accident. He sees this as his chance to finally eliminate the Wilma problem. He brings Wilma to the box, but suddenly there is no trace of the monster. Wilma insults him and describes him as a failure. Finally the monster appears and pulls Wilma into the box.

He later talks to Stanley about his perfect murder. Stanley asks what he did with the box. Henry tells him that he threw her into a gravel pit and that the monster drowned. However, the last scene of the episode shows the monster breaking out of the box.

Bug spray ( They're Creeping Up on You )

Mr. Pratt is a rich, ruthless man and over the top hygienist who lives in a clinically clean apartment. When there is a power outage in the city, his worst nightmare becomes a reality. Thousands of cockroaches invade his home. Mr. Pratt locks himself in an adjoining room to escape the cockroaches, but they invade this too and kill Mr. Pratt. At the end you see all the bugs crawling out of the mouth and other places on Mr. Pratt's corpse until the room is flooded with cockroaches.

epilogue

criticism

“Macabre episode film that parodies set pieces of trivial art - sometimes a bit crass in the means of expression and half-hearted in the critical approach. An entertaining film only in parts. "

Awards and interesting facts

  • The film was nominated for the Saturn Award in 1983 in the categories of best film poster and best horror film .
  • In 1987 and 2006 the two sequels Creepshow 2 and Creepshow 3 appeared .
  • King received critical acclaim for his portrayal of Jordy Verrill - this episode is considered the best in the film.
  • In Germany, episode 3 fell victim to the scissors in the cinema - the film was considered too long overall. On video, however, you can also see Washed Away .
  • George A. Romero also filmed King's novel Stark - The Dark Half and was temporarily earmarked for the movie Cemetery of the Stuffed Animals .
  • Stephen King's son, Joe King, played his only film role to date with the character of Billy.
  • All of the cockroaches from episode 5 were briefly poisoned after filming .
  • From Creepshow several different versions in German-speaking exist:
  1. The old video version, which was slightly cut and approved for ages 16 and over. This version had the best synchronization because the film was also shown in the cinema with this.
  2. At the beginning of the DVD era, the best-buy DVD and a “United Video” VHS version, which was also released for ages 16 and up, but was again heavily cut compared to the old video version. In addition, the episode Washed Away was completely omitted. (This fate also happened to her on various television broadcasts.)
  3. The rarest version is the uncut version, which was released by ems new media in early 2001 and which was only sold in very small numbers. This version has been completely re-dubbed. However, the new synchronization is very bad, which is due to the unknown, one-dimensional speakers. The DVD is very rare and has become a sought-after collector's item .
  4. There is also a DVD version from Austria, which contains the uncut version of the film in the old cinema dubbing. The DVD is in an oversized hard box and is limited to 5000 copies. The sound (5.1 upmix ) and the picture are very good. The DVD is distributed by the “Award Video” label. Although a barcode and the address of the label are printed on the cover, there are arguments in several film forums about whether this publication is blackmailing. What is certain is that this version, with a playing time of 120 minutes, is the longest that is available on the German-speaking market.
  5. Laser Paradise has had a German Blu-ray Disc version since 2015. The old German original cinema synchronization is available on the Blu-ray Disc. There is no English-language original soundtrack.
