Crazies is an American horror film from 1973 . It is about a biochemical warfare agent that contaminates the groundwater of a small American town. The film was released in German cinemas on December 21, 1979.

action

A plane crashes near the town of Evans City, Pennsylvania . The cargo on board the machine consists of containers with the warfare agent Trixie . Trixie gets into the groundwater through the burst container. The released warfare agent immediately kills or turns people into psychopaths. The initially isolated cases of contamination are rapidly increasing in frequency. The advancing military declared a state of emergency and sealed off the city. In order to keep the citizens under control, they are rounded up by heavily armed soldiers. In contrast to the unprotected residents of the city, the soldiers wear protective suits and gas masks to protect themselves from the epidemic.

While scientists and the military are feverishly looking for a solution, resistance to the measures of the military is rising in the still healthy part of the population. A small group defies orders from the military. The group tries to flee the city, but is repeatedly held up by clashes with the soldiers and gradually decimated by the attacks of the military and the epidemic. The situation is escalating, the special forces are shooting at practically everything that moves, the scientists are unable to find a way to stop the epidemic, and more and more citizens are infected and attacking each other. The continental spread of the disease seems unstoppable. The originally planned cover-up of the accident is out of the question. At the end of the film, the President of the United States gives orders to a bomber circling over town.

criticism

The lexicon of international films judged: "The densely staged, action-packed horror film wants to offer entertainment and warning at the same time, but gives away any accusation of irresponsible politics and science through the abundance of disgusting details."

Romero himself made negative comments about the film in a 1978 interview while filming Zombie ( Dawn of the Dead ). He thinks it is less successful because his political statements are too superficial. In his opinion, Crazies is too directly concerned with the power of the military and government. This would make the movie's intention too obvious and therefore less interesting.

Remarks

  • The film, which was made on a small budget, only opened in 1979 in the wake of the success of Romero's Zombie in Germany.
  • Many residents of Evans City played as extras in Crazies . Specifically, the Evans City firefighters not only played some citizens but were also involved in the special effects as they had a license to handle explosives.

Remake

On May 27, 2010 the remake The Crazies was released . Timothy Olyphant , Radha Mitchell and Danielle Panabaker can be seen in the lead roles, directed by Breck Eisner . George A. Romero is again executive producer.
