action

prolog
The three episodes (short films) are supported by a framework story: Billy stands on the roadside and waits for the supplier of his favorite comic, Creepshow . Then the "Creep" appears, a morbid guy, and tells the episodes ...
Old chief Holzkopf (Old Chief Wood'N Head)
An elderly couple who run a business live in a run-down village. The man is busy finishing a wooden Indian standing in front of the shop. When a visitor entrusts him with valuable jewelry, he promises to keep it. Shortly afterwards, three young men raid the shop and steal all useful goods, including jewelry. After shooting the couple, they flee by car. When driving away, the wooden Indian comes to life. In the evening he looks for the thieves and kills them with the weapons he carries with him.
The Raft (The Raft)
Two boys and two girls, all around 16, swim on an abandoned raft anchored in the middle of a remote lake in the summer and smoke joints there. The adventurous teenagers are approached by a dark gray organism that looks like an oil slick. Suddenly the unknown creature catches and devours one youth after another. Only one is left and swims quickly to the shore. When he reaches the bank and feels safe, he is swallowed up by the oil slick.
The hitchhiker (The Hitchhiker)
After a visit from a callboy, a successful businesswoman runs over a hitchhiker through her carelessness and is hit and missed. Drivers arriving at the scene of the crime find few clues about the course of events, while the woman hopes for a chance of never being caught. When she stops a few hundred meters from the scene of the accident, she sees in the rearview mirror how the dead man comes running towards her. A chase begins. The dead man lies on her car and tries to grab her while driving through the roof window. When she unceremoniously drives through a wooded area, he is shaken off a tree trunk. The woman takes a gun out of her pocket and shoots him when he opens the car door. She runs him over several times afterwards and finally hits him a few more times against a tree until she faints. After she later wakes up, she drives back onto the street and is finally in her garage, where the dead person surprises her and ultimately kills her.
epilogue
The story of Billy, which begins in the prologue, is continued between the episodes in the form of animated sequences in which Billy is chased by a hostile gang of youths. He flees to a meadow where he grew giant carnivorous plants that eventually crush the gang leader and his men.

The raft - differences from the short story

The stories Old Chief Holzkopf and The Hitchhiker were scripted by Stephen King and George A. Romero exclusively for Creepshow 2 ; there is no short literary story about it. However, the short story The Raft , written by Stephen King in 1982 and contained in the short story collection The Song of the Dead or Blood, served as a template for the second episode . The original title is The Raft or The Float .

Modified scenes

  • In contrast to the short story, Deke is not pulled through a crack, but through a hole about the width of a hip that appears when he breaks through the planks with his foot.
  • Randy picks up on LaVerne while she sleeps; he does not push her away in disgust when she is attacked, but watches helplessly as the creature pulls her off the raft.

New scenes

  • Randy sees the "oil stain" eating a duck as they swim towards the raft.
  • The stain can reach for people like with slimy tentacles.
  • While LaVerne is being eaten, Randy tries his luck and swims to the bank. He actually manages to take off the creature, but when he crawls ashore, it rises like a magic carpet behind him, rushes on him and drags him to his doom. In the short story, however, he only throws himself off the raft when it seems pointless to him to hope for help.

criticism

"Well-worn horror without surprises and macabre humor, but with intrusive and widely played brutal scenes."

Trivia

  • Director Michael Gornick has been the cameraman on all of George A. Romero's films since 1977 ( Martin ) , including the first Creepshow film.
  • Make-up artist Tom Savini plays the role of creep.
  • Stephen King has a supporting role as the truck driver in the episode The Hitchhiker .
  • Because of the rain, shooting days had to be postponed again and again. A security guard was posted on a mountain. He had to communicate by radio when a piece of blue sky was visible and the next scene could be set up.
