career

Beginnings in Poland

Lewandowski comes from a sporty family. His father Krzysztof was junior European champion in judo , his mother Iwona played in the highest Polish volleyball league. Both studied sports and worked as sports teachers after their active careers .

Robert Lewandowski began playing football at the age of eight in Leszno , Mazovia near Warsaw , with Partyzant Leszno and then spent seven years in the youth department of Varsovia Warsaw . In 2004 he attracted interest from Legia Warsaw and in January 2005 he joined fourth division side Delta Warsaw , who represented a Legia Warsaw farm team . There he scored 5 goals in the second half of the season and officially switched to Legia in the summer of 2005, for whose second team he played in the 2nd division , but missed a large part of the season due to injury, after which his contract with Legia was not renewed . That's why he moved to the third division club Znicz Pruszków in 2006 , where he was top scorer with 15 goals in his first season and rose with him. In the 2007/08 season he scored 21 goals in 32 games and was top scorer in the 2nd division.

Due to his good performances in the 2nd division, Legia Warsaw were interested in Lewandowski's return, but the club ultimately decided against the transfer as the sporting director found him too physically weak. On June 18, 2008, Lewandowski signed a four-year contract with first division club Lech Poznan . In the qualifier to participate in the UEFA Cup on 17 July 2008, in a 1-0 first-leg win at Azerbaijani champions Chazar Lenkoran , he scored his first goal in international club competition. On August 8, 2008 (1st matchday) he scored his first first division goal in the 2-3 defeat at home against GKS Bełchatów with the goal to make it 2-1 in the 67th minute.

In December 2008, Lewandowski was voted "Newcomer of the Year" in Poland. On May 19, 2009, he won the Polish Cup with Lech Poznań by beating Ruch Chorzów 1–0 in the final . After the season, he was named "Rediscovery of the Season" 2008/09 . On July 25, 2009, after beating Wisła Kraków 4–3 on penalties , he also won the Supercup , his second title in a year. In December 2009 he was nominated for the 'Poland's Footballer of the Year' election, but lost to his namesake Mariusz Lewandowski .

Borussia Dortmund

During the 2010 summer break, Lewandowski joined German Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund , with whom he signed a contract dated June 30, 2014. On August 22, 2010 (1st matchday) he made his debut in the 0-2 defeat in the home game against Bayer 04 Leverkusen , when he came on in the 63rd minute for Sebastian Kehl . Lewandowski scored his first Bundesliga goal on September 19, 2010 (4th matchday) in a 3-1 away win against FC Schalke 04 . He played his first competitive game in the starting line-up on 2 December 2010 in the Europa League , replacing the injured Lucas Barrios . In his first season, he played 33 of 34 Bundesliga games and contributed eight goals to the championship . Lewandowski was mainly used as a substitute and was the best joker of the Bundesliga season.

In the 2011/12 season he benefited from the injury-related absence of Lucas Barrios and played all league games from the start until the winter break. He won the championship again with Borussia Dortmund in 2012, became the third-best scorer with 22 goals and replaced Jan Furtok as the top Polish goalscorer of a Bundesliga season to date – second with 20 goals in 1990/91 .

On 12 May 2012, Lewandowski scored three goals in a 5-2 win over FC Bayern Munich in the DFB Cup final , helping BVB to their first and only double to date . On 24 April 2013, he scored all the goals for Borussia Dortmund in the first leg of the Champions League semifinals in a 4-1 win over Real Madrid ; it was the most goals scored by a player in a semi-final of the competition up to that point. In doing so, he paved the way for BVB to reach the final , which they lost 2-1 to FC Bayern Munich on May 25, 2013 at London's Wembley Stadium .

At the end of the 2013/14 season , Lewandowski was top scorer in the Bundesliga for the first time with 20 goals.

FC Bayern Munich

For the 2014/15 season , Lewandowski moved to Bayern Munich on a free transfer, who gave him a contract on January 4, 2014 that ran until June 30, 2019. He played his first competitive game for FCB in the 2-0 defeat on August 13, 2014 in the DFL Supercup game against BVB, his former club. He made his Bundesliga debut for FCB on August 22, 2014 (matchday 1) in a 2-1 home win against VfL Wolfsburg . He scored his first Bundesliga goal for FC Bayern on August 30, 2014, the 2nd match day, in a 1-1 away game against FC Schalke 04 with the opening goal in the 10th minute. In 2015 he won the German championship with the team.

On September 22, 2015, he became the first substitute in the Bundesliga to score five goals in a 5-1 home win against VfL Wolfsburg . Within eight minutes and 59 seconds he turned the game around in favor of FC Bayern after Wolfsburg had taken a 1-0 lead. In just three minutes and 22 seconds he scored the fastest hat-trick in the Bundesliga to date and the times for scoring four and five goals are also records. He is the 14th player to score five goals in a Bundesliga game and it was the 16th so-called 'five pack' in the league. His fifth goal with a side kick was voted goal of the month .

On the following matchday, on September 26, 2015, Lewandowski scored his 100th Bundesliga goal with a goal to make it 1-0 against Mainz 05 and his tenth goal of the season with a 2-0 win in a 3-0 away win. Previously, only Gerd Müller had scored a double-digit number of goals after seven matchdays in the Bundesliga. On October 4, 2015, he scored two goals in a 5-1 win against his former club Borussia Dortmund and equaled the record of Christian Müller (1964/65) and Gerd Müller (1968/69) with twelve goals in the first eight Bundesliga games . He set another record with nine goals in three consecutive Bundesliga games. After the 21st matchday of the season he had scored 21 goals, the most since Gerd Müller in the 1972/73 season and one more than in his entire 2013/14 season, in which he was Bundesliga top scorer. At the end of the 2015/16 season , Lewandowski became top scorer for the second time with 30 goals. He is the sixth player to score 30 or more goals in a Bundesliga season. In the 2016/17 season he scored 30 goals again. After Gerd Müller, he is the second player in Bundesliga history to score 30 goals or more in two seasons. In July 2017, Lewandowski was named the best player of the 2016/17 Bundesliga season by the football magazine 11 Freunde .

On December 13, 2016, he prematurely extended his contract term until 2021. The contract, which guaranteed him an annual base salary of 15 million euros, made Lewandowski the best-paid player in the Bundesliga at the time. The contract also included title and performance bonuses totaling seven million euros.

His penalty goal to make it 3-0 in the 53rd minute in the 3-1 win at home against Bayer 04 Leverkusen at the start of the 2017/18 season was preceded by an intervention by the video assistant for the first time . Lewandowski drew referee Tobias Stieler 's attention to a foul committed on him by Charles Aránguiz . After consultation with video assistant Jochen Drees , he decided on a penalty. On March 10, 2018, he scored three times in the Bundesliga game against Hamburger SV (6-0) and scored his 100th goal for Munich with his third goal. On April 6, 2019, Lewandowski scored two goals against his former team from Dortmund (final score 5-0). The first of the two was his 200th Bundesliga goal.

In the 2019/20 season, he scored at least one goal in each of the first eleven Bundesliga games, setting a new record. On matchday 10 of this season, Lewandowski played his 300th Bundesliga game in a 5-1 draw in Frankfurt . In the 6-0 away win in Belgrade in the penultimate Champions League group game , the Pole scored four times within 15 minutes, marking the fastest four-goal in Champions League history. In the same season he suffered a broken shinbone on his left knee joint . At the end of the season, he secured his fifth top scorer in the Bundesliga with 34 goals – only Gerd Müller (seven) managed this more often. Only Gerd Müller scored more than 34 goals in a season (three times; Dieter Müller also scored 34). In the 2019/20 DFB Cup final , he won his fourth title and was the competition's top scorer for the fifth time. In doing so, he set a new record. In the 2019/20 season, he finished second with 34 goals among the top scorers in the five major European leagues, behind Italy's Ciro Immobile (36 goals). He also finished as top scorer in the 2019/20 UEFA Champions League with 15 goals in 11 games , which he also won with FC Bayern, winning the treble . Lewandowski thus broke the dominance of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo in the Champions League , one of whom was always the top scorer between 2008 and 2019 ( both together with Neymar in 2015 ).

At the start of the 2020/21 season , he scored in the 8-0 win over FC Schalke 04 in his tenth Bundesliga game in a row, setting a new record. For his achievements, Lewandowski was voted UEFA Player of the Year (“ European Footballer of the Year ”) by UEFA in October 2020 . After Gerd Müller ( Ballon d'Or 1970), Franz Beckenbauer (Ballon d'Or 1972 and 1976), Karl-Heinz Rummenigge (Ballon d'Or 1980 and 1981) and Franck Ribéry (UEFA Player of the Year 2013) the 5th player of FC Bayern and also after Kevin Keegan from Hamburger SV (Ballon d'Or 1978 and 1979) and Matthias Sammer from Borussia Dortmund (Ballon d'Or 1996) the 7th Bundesliga player, who was awarded as the best player in Europe. In the 4-3 win against Hertha BSC he scored his 100th Bundesliga goal for FCB in the Allianz Arena with a 1-0 goal and with the third of his four goals he scored his 250th competitive goal (in 294th appearance) for the Munich to. On the following Bundesliga matchday against Eintracht Frankfurt (5-0), he scored a hat-trick, which brought him to a record start of ten goals in the first five games of the season. In the 1-1 draw at Union Berlin on December 12, 2020, he scored his 175th Bundesliga goal in his 200th such game for his club. On the following matchday in the 2-1 home win against VfL Wolfsburg, Lewandowski scored his Bundesliga goals 250 and 251 in his 332nd appearance. A day later, the 32-year-old was named FIFA World Player of the Year , while France Football 's Ballon d'Or was not awarded that year. On Matchday 16, Lewandowski scored his 21st goal of the season in his 15th appearance of the season, breaking Gerd Müller 's record of 20 goals in the first half of the 1968/69 season . On matchday 17, the Pole extended the record to 22 goals. He scored the first goal of the game in the 4-1 CL away win against Lazio Roma and is now third in the Champions League all-time top scorers list with 72 goals , ahead of Raúl (71). In the 3-1 away win against SV Werder Bremen on March 13, 2021 , he scored his 268th goal (3-0), which means he shared 2nd place in the all-time top scorer list in the Bundesliga (together with Klaus Fischer ). In the subsequent 4-0 home win against VfB Stuttgart, Lewandowski scored a hat-trick in the first half from a man down, something only Ulf Kirsten had previously achieved, leaving him sole second with only Gerd Müller (365) ahead of him. Before matchday 27, Lewandowski, who had 35 goals this season at the time, suffered a sprained ligament in his right knee and had to sit out four matchdays. On the penultimate day, he equaled the record of 40 goals set by Gerd Müller in the 1971/72 season. On the final matchday, he scored his 41st goal in his 29th Bundesliga game of the season (17,885 days after Müller's record), becoming the record- holder for the number of goals scored in a Bundesliga season. He scored eight of his 41 goals from penalties. Müller scored his 40 goals in 34 games exclusively from open play.

On Matchday 3 of the 2021/22 season, he scored three goals against Hertha BSC, the second goal was the 300th competitive goal in the 333rd game for FC Bayern. He also scored in the twelfth Bundesliga home game in a row, breaking the record set by Gerd Müller and Jupp Heynckes. In the following home game against VfL Bochum , he scored again and became the sole record holder. He also scored in 19 competitive games in a row up to this game, setting another record in Germany. On November 2, 2021, in his 100th CL game against Benfica Lisbon (5:2), he scored three goals (a total of 81 goals), and he also missed a penalty for the first time in the competition with his 15th penalty. At the end of November 2021, Lewandowski finished 2nd behind Lionel Messi in the 2021 Ballon d'Or . However, France Football honored him as Scorer of the Year for his 53 competitive goals with FC Bayern and the national team ; this price was newly introduced at short notice. In the 3-2 away win on matchday 14 in Dortmund, he scored his Bundelisga away goals 117 and 118, overtaking Klaus Fischer and now the record holder. On December 14, 2021, he matched Gerd Müller's record for most Bundesliga goals (42) in a year with two goals against VfB Stuttgart. Three days later he scored again against VfL Wolfsburg and holds the sole record with 43 goals. On January 15, 2022, he scored his 300th Bundesliga goal with a hat-trick against 1. FC Köln. He defended his title ahead of Messi in the 2021 FIFA World Player of the Year election.

His contract with FC Bayern runs until 2023.

Lewandowski also ceded his complete advertising rights to Kucharski; In return, Lewandowski received a one-time payment equivalent to approximately 14,000 euros. Mutual accusations between Lewandowski and his former advisor
