First in the 1994-95 season of the German Bundesliga men and thus German champion was Borussia Dortmund . The season began on August 19, 1994 and ended on June 17, 1995.
Season overview
The 1994/95 season ended with Borussia Dortmund's first championship in the Bundesliga . Competitor Werder Bremen lost 3-1 at FC Bayern Munich , Otto Rehhagel's future employer, and with it the championship. Controversial discussions sparked an action classified as a swallow by the Dortmund player Andreas Möller in the game against Karlsruher SC . The SC Freiburg with newcomer Jorg Heinrich landed contrary to many expectations in third place and qualified by such Borussia Moenchengladbach with coach Bernd Krauss and Italy returnee Stefan Effenberg for the UEFA Cup . Increased media interest caused a financial crisis of Dynamo Dresden around its president Rolf Jürgen Otto and the shortened coaching career of Jupp Heynckes at Eintracht Frankfurt , who suspended Anthony Yeboah, Maurizio Gaudino and Jay-Jay Okocha. Only Okocha stayed with the unity. The 1994/95 season was the last with the old point rule and with Bayer 05 Uerdingen as a works club.
Bayern Munich
With the Italian “maestro” Giovanni Trapattoni as coach and the newcomers Kahn , Papin and Sutter , Bayern Munich wanted to defend at least the championship title. While Bayern were only eliminated in the Champions League in the semi-finals against eventual winners Ajax Amsterdam , they fell short of expectations in the Bundesliga. Thanks to Borussia Mönchengladbach's cup victory, the record champions reached the UEFA Cup competition for the 1995/96 season. Injuries to players like Kahn, Matthäus and Papin are considered to be the cause of missing the goal in the league. A one-off case occurred on matchday 26. The Munich team won 5-2 at Eintracht Frankfurt, but played with four amateurs from the 72nd minute after Dietmar Hamann was substituted on . Since only three amateurs are allowed according to the DFB statutes, the game was rated 2-0 for Eintracht Frankfurt.
Controversy about Andreas Möller's swallow
At Borussia Dortmund's home game against Karlsruher SC on matchday 26, Andreas Möller got a penalty for Borussia Dortmund by pretending to be fouling in the penalty area in the 75th minute with the score of 0: 1. Michael Zorc converted the penalty to 1: 1, before Matthias Sammer scored the winning goal to 2: 1 in the 85th minute of the game. The sports show commented in retrospect that Borussia Dortmund turned the game thanks to the penalty.
Thanks to this victory and the 1-1 draw from pursuers Werder Bremen at 1. FC Köln on the same match day, Borussia Dortmund was able to outstrip Bremen by one point in the Bundesliga table. Borussia Dortmund's championship in the 1994/95 season was also won one point ahead of Werder Bremen. Borussia Dortmund's goal difference (67:33) on the last day of the 1994/95 season was three goals better than Werder Bremen's (70:39). On the other hand, BVB's subsequent away game at Bayern Munich, for which Möller was subsequently suspended because of his swallow, as well as for the game against Dynamo Dresden (2-0), lost 2-1.
Bayer 05 Uerdingen
Relegation candidate number one Uerdingen not only held the class, but was also not on a relegation zone on any match day. However, after the season, the Krefeld team lost the support of the Bayer plant.
License withdrawal of Dynamo Dresden
Relegated Dynamo Dresden was refused the license for the following season on May 13, 1995 for economic reasons. Four points had already been deducted from Dresden in the previous season for violating license conditions. The decision was confirmed on May 22, 1995 by the DFB board and on July 5, 1995 by the neutral sports court. Dresden was incorporated into the regional league.
First doping case in Bundesliga history
On February 6, 1995, Roland Wohlfarth from VfL Bochum was sentenced to a two-month ban by the DFB sports court for a grossly negligent violation of doping regulations. On February 16, the judgment was upheld by the DFB Federal Court. Wohlfarth tested positive on January 24, 1995 on the sidelines of the indoor tournament in Leipzig. Without consulting the team doctor , he had taken an appetite suppressant containing the prohibited substance norephedrine . The Wohlfarth case was the first doping case in Bundesliga history.
