Marc Arnold (born September 19, 1970 in Johannesburg , South Africa ) is a former German - South African football player and today's functionary .
Career as a player
Arnold began his career with the Ratinger club Rot-Weiß Lintorf in the F-youth. He later went through the youth teams of the Stuttgarter Kickers , for which he was used for the first time in 1990 in the 2nd Bundesliga. On March 2, 1991, the then 20-year-old came on as a substitute in the second division match against Braunschweig at half time.
By far his most successful season as a goalscorer, Arnold spent in the 1993/94 season in the then third-class Oberliga Baden-Württemberg at SSV Ulm 1846 , with which he became the league champion, but narrowly failed in the promotion round to the 2nd Bundesliga . In 34 league games this season for Ulm, Arnold scored 24 goals.
For the 1994/95 season Arnold moved from Ulm to Borussia Dortmund , with whom he became German champion. He scored his first goal in the Bundesliga in November 1997 for Hertha BSC , to which he switched in 1995 and which was promoted to the Bundesliga in the 1996/97 season .
After side trips at Karlsruher SC , LR Ahlen and Eintracht Braunschweig , Arnold moved to KSV Hessen Kassel in the Oberliga Hessen for the 2005/06 season . With the KSV he rose to the Regionalliga Süd and ended his active career there at the end of the 2007 season.
Arnold, who was born in Johannesburg, was appointed to the provisional 24-man squad by the South African Football Association before the 1998 World Cup . At the time he only had a German passport, but was supposed to be naturalized at short notice and had already signed the application. Ultimately, however, he was sorted out as one of two players from the squad. Even after the tournament, he did not make an international match for South Africa.
Career as a functionary
After the end of his career, Arnold initially worked as a manager at Hessen Kassel until he joined Eintracht Braunschweig as sporting director at the beginning of June 2008. During his tenure, Eintracht rose to the second division in 2011 and the first division in 2013. Under his leadership as sporting director, the focus was on personal continuity and a consolidation and austerity course, which also led to the club going over to bringing mostly talented young players from lower leagues; They signed mostly free transfer players. The record transfer in his first five years was Ermin Bičakčić from VfB Stuttgart II, which Eintracht had cost 100,000 euros. After the first division promotion, his contract was prematurely extended by three years to 2017. On August 29, 2018, Arnold was released from his duties after 10 years in the meanwhile third division club.
