Esera Tavai Tuaolo (born July 11, 1968 in Honolulu ) is an American former American football player in the position of defensive tackles . He played in the National Football League (NFL) for nine years , mainly for the Green Bay Packers and the Minnesota Vikings .

Tuaolo is of Samoan descent and grew up in a farming family. He played for Oregon State University and was a member of the Pi Kappa Alpha Association.

In 1991 he was selected in the NFL Draft by the Green Bay Packers. In the 1998 season he reached the Super Bowl with the Atlanta Falcons . During his athletic career, Tuaolo also played for the Carolina Panthers , Jacksonville Jaguars , Minnesota Vikings and the Green Bay Packers .

With his coming-out in 2002 Tuaolo after David Kopay and Roy Simmons , the third former NFL player who has taken this step. Esera Tuaolo has twins. Together with the NFL leadership he works to fight homophobia in the NFL and is a board member of the Gay and Lesbian Athletics Foundation .

Tuaolo also tried his hand at being a singer. In 1995 he released the mini-album One Man's Island . A year later he recorded the ballad Another Broken Heart for the sampler NFL Country together with the country singer Lari White . In 2006 he sang the national anthem in the opening event of the Gay Games . In 2017 he took part in the 13th season of the US version of the casting show The Voice , where he sang in the team of country singer Blake Shelton and was eliminated in the first playoff round.
