Lari White (2014)

Lari White Michele (* 13. May 1965 in Dunedin , Florida ; † 23. January 2018 in Nashville , Tennessee ) was an American country - singer - songwriter and three-time Grammy -Preisträgerin. Occasionally she also appeared as an actress and producer .

Beginnings

As a child Lari sang with parents and siblings in the gospel group White Family Singers . She also played guitar and piano. Even the loss of a little finger did not discourage her. At the University of Miami, she studied music technology on a scholarship. She played in bands, worked as a backup singer, and sang commercial jingles.

She moved to Nashville in 1988 after winning the You Can Be A Star talent competition on local television station TNN (The Nashville Network) . A single, Flying Above the Rain , was produced on the Capitol label , but it wasn't too successful. She then got a job as a songwriter at a music publisher. In 1990, Tammy Wynette recorded the song Where's The Fire, written by White and Ron Moore, for one of their last albums, Heart Over Mind . With regular appearances White also tried to gain a foothold in the local music scene.

Career

In 1991 Rodney Crowell became aware of the young talent and offered her a job as a backup singer in his band. Their long-term dry spell was over. Crowell also brokered her a record deal with RCA and produced her first album Lead Me Not in 1993 . However, three singles that were released only made it into the lower ranks of the Top 100. Their next album, Wishes, was more successful. Three singles extracted from it reached the top ten of the country charts: That's My Baby , Now I Know (1994) and That's How You Know (When You're in Love) (1995). In May 1995 she received her first gold award for the CD Wishes .

Her third album Don't Fence With Me could not repeat the previous success in 1996 despite a top 20 hit with Ready, Willing and Able . White also received negative publicity after the video for the second single Wild At Heart was removed from the program shortly after it was broadcast by country music channels such as CMT or TNN . The video showed White dancing in a straitjacket, admitted to a mental hospital. After it was broadcast, people with nervous disorders and an organization dealing with their concerns complained about the video.

White subsequently lost her record deal. Before that, the duet Helping Me Get Over You with Travis Tritt was created , which reached the top 20 of the country charts. In the same year she also recorded the ballad Another Broken Heart for the sampler NFL Country with the then still active American football player Esera Tuaolo . RCA also released the compilation The Best of Lari White , which includes a version of Amazing Grace .

In 1997, White became the first female artist to sign a contract with the newly founded Disney label Lyric Street . A year later she had a top 20 hit with the single Stepping Stone, which was released from the album of the same name . But here too she was denied great success. Her next album, Green Eyed Soul , was produced on her own in her home studio in 2004 and released on her own record label "Skinny WhiteGirl Records". In contrast to its predecessors, it mainly contained music from the areas of soul and pop . In 2007 the album My First Affair followed with Broadway and musical songs.

White received three Grammy Awards in the category "Best Southern, Country or Bluegrass Gospel Album" for her work . She won the award for her participation in the compilations Amazing Grace: A Country Salute to Gospel (1996), the successor Amazing Grace 2 (1998) and 1999 for the soundtrack to Apostle! .

White has made a name for herself as a producer since the late 1990s. She was responsible for the albums Let Them Be Little (2005) by Billy Dean and White Trash With Money (2006) by Toby Keith . White's latest production work includes My Stupid Heart for Shawn Mullins , which was released in 2015.

In addition to her musical career, White worked as an actress. She worked in the 2000 movie Cast Away, alongside Tom Hanks, in a small supporting role as the artist Bettina Peterson. Another small role followed in 2010 in Country Strong alongside Gwyneth Paltrow and Tim McGraw .

In February 2017, after a ten-year CD break, the double EP Old Friends, New Loves was released , which was financed by a crowdfunding campaign. The work contains both new songs and re-recordings of a selection of hits and album tracks. Star guests include Suzy Bogguss , Delbert McClinton and Lee Roy Parnell .

Just a few months later, in September 2017, White was diagnosed with peritoneal cancer. Almost four months later, she succumbed to the advanced disease. Previously, another crowdfunding campaign raised over $ 100,000 for cancer treatment. White leaves behind her husband, songwriter Chuck Cannon, and three children.
