Lee Roy Parnell II (born December 21, 1956 in Abilene , Texas ) is an American country singer, songwriter and blues guitarist.

Childhood and youth

Lee Roy came into contact with country music from an early age . His father was friends with Bob Wills and Lee Roy was already on stage with the big star at the age of six. His first instrument was a drum kit, but he soon switched to guitar. He was naturally influenced by Bob Wills and thus by Western Swing . But the country blues of the Allman Brothers also made a deep impression on him. The guitarist Duane Allman became his most important role model. From him he adopted the slide guitar style. After graduating from high school, he moved to Austin and made a living in the local club scene. His grueling Austin stint lasted over ten years; he married and worked for a local radio station for a while.

Career

After his divorce and suffering from alcohol problems, he tried a fresh start in 1987 in Nashville . He initially had some success as a songwriter and then managed to set up a band. His steadily growing popularity in the local music scene led to a record deal with Arista Records in 1989 . A year later, his first album was released, which contained several original compositions. His breakthrough came in 1992 with the single What Kind Of Fool Do You Think I Am, which reached number two on the country charts. His second album, Love Without Mercy, released in the same year , sold significantly better than the first. Some singles released were able to place in the top 10. A number of well-known country musicians interpreted his songs.

In 1994 Lee Roy Parnell first reached the top of the country charts with I'm Holding My Own . This was followed by more singles, who were also able to place high in the charts. A Little Bit Of You and Heart's Desire reached number 1 in 1995. From 1997, its sales figures dropped significantly. In 2000 he moved to Vanguard Records , where in 2001 the album Tell The Truth was released.
