Delbert McClinton

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Delbert McClinton (born November 4, 1940 in Lubbock , Texas ) is an American rhythm and blues , soul and country singer, harmonica player and a two-time Grammy award winner. With the combination of country music , blues , soul and rock 'n' roll he succeeded in creating his own sound and style, which made him a favorite of the critics, but never made him one of the big stars, although his musical career extends from the late 1950s to the present day. In the course of this, Americana Music developed in the USA , and he is considered one of the protagonists .

Life

Delbert McClinton grew up in Fort Worth and discovered the blues in his teenage years. His mother was a beautician and his father worked as a switchman for the "Rock Island Railroad", which was sung about by many Texan musicians. After getting in touch with the blues for the first time, he formed his first band, The Mellow Fellows, a group of enthusiastic, but not very talented teenagers. He gained his first musical experience on the harmonica .

He later became a member of the band "The Straitjackets", the house band of a blues club that accompanied traveling blues greats such as Howlin 'Wolf , Jimmy Reed , Sonny Boy Williamson II and Bobby Blue Bland . McClinton also played the harmonica on the hit Bruce Channels Hey Baby! . He accompanied him on a tour of England. This is where the legend arose that he taught the young John Lennon the harmonica, which is not true because Lennon already played the harmonica. It is true, however, that the two got to know each other. After he returned to the USA, he founded the band "Rondells", with whom he had a minor hit in 1965.

In 1972 he went to Los Angeles , where he founded the duo "Delbert & Glen" with Glen Clark , which also recorded two albums. After returning to Texas in 1974, he devoted himself to songwriting, including Two More Bottles of Wine , which was a top hit for Emmylou Harris , and B Movie Boxcar Blues , which the Blues Brothers John Belushi and Dan Ackroyd added to their repertoire. He also recorded his own records for ABC and Muscle Shoals Sound Studio . After this company went bankrupt, he took a break in the early 1980s. In 1986 he returned as a singer on Roy Buchanan's Dancing on the Edge . His next album, Live from Austin , co-produced by his saxophonist Don Wise , earned him his first Grammy nomination (Best Contemporary Blues Album). In 1989 he played as part of the all-star band with a dozen or so R&B superstars, including Albert Collins , Dr. John , Billy Preston , Willie Dixon , Percy Sledge , Carla Thomas , Bo Diddley and Stevie Ray Vaughan , at the inaugural concert for the presidential election of George HW Bush .

In 1990 he went to Nashville, where he became a sought-after songwriter (often with his partner Gary Nicholson). In the field of contemporary country music, he has written material for Wynonna Judd , Vince Gill , Lee Roy Parnell and Martina McBride, among others . His big breakthrough came when he recorded the duet Good Man, Good Woman with Bonnie Raitt in 1991 . It appeared on Luck of the Draw and received a Grammy (Best Rock Vocal, Duo or Group). In 1993 he took the title song Weatherman for the comedy "Groundhog Day" ( And Groundhog Day ) on.

He came onto the market with new recordings in the 2000s as well. The 2001 album Nothing Personal stayed on the Billboard charts for months , earned him national television appearances and made him reach a high point in his career after 40 years. In 2004 he was a juror at the 4th Independent Music Awards . In 2006 his album The Cost of Living was awarded a Grammy for Best Contemporary Blues Album.

McClinton is also the star of the 1998 documentary Rocking the Boat: A Musical Conversation and Journey directed by Jay Curlee. The documentary includes interviews and appearances by McClinton, Marcia Ball , Rodney Crowell , Stephen Bruton, Wayne Toups, Jimmy Hall, Paul Thorn , Jeffrey Steele, Mel Fitzmundson and Teresa James. In 2008 the film was released on DVD.
