Tanya Tucker
Tanya Denise Tucker (born October 10, 1958 in Seminole , Texas ) is an American country singer who was one of the ten most successful singers of her genre in the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s. Since 1972 she has had nearly 70 hits in the country charts, including ten number one hits. This includes Lizzie and the Rainman , her only top 40 hit on the American pop charts. In 1991 she was honored as "Singer of the Year" with the most important distinction on the country scene, the CMA Award . The music magazine Rolling Stone named Tucker 67th among the 100 greatest country singers of all time.
Beginnings
Tucker was enthusiastic about music from an early age. She and her father attended country concerts whenever the opportunity arose. A few times she even got on stage to sing a duet with the star. Together with her sister La Costa Tucker , who later also became a successful country singer, she formed a band, the Country Westeners. In 1969 the family moved to Las Vegas . Tucker recorded a demo tape that ended up in the hands of Billy Sherrill , the influential CBS manager. In 1972, at the age of thirteen, she was signed to the Columbia label.
Career
The first single, Delta Dawn , made it into the country top 10 in 1972. The album of the same name was also successful. Love Is The Answer almost reached the top spot in 1973. In the same year she had her first number 1 hit with What's Your Mama's Name , and the Academy of Country Music named her “Newcomer of the Year”. Country music had a child star. In the same year she had her second top hit with Blood Red And Going Down , followed in 1974 by the controversial Would You Lay With Me (In a Field of Stone) .
In 1975 Tucker switched to the MCA label, where she was able to build on past successes. By the end of the decade, it had had three number 1 hits and several top 10 finishes. A few times it even made it into the pop hit parades. Occasionally she took on minor film roles. In 1978 an image change was carried out: the child star became a sexy twenties. An affair with Glen Campbell and the sexy cover of her new album TNT were an expression of change. It received another gold record, but the sales figures plummeted over the next few years. Even a change of label was unable to stop the downward trend. There were also alcohol and drug problems.
After rehab at the Betty Ford Center , Tucker tried a fresh start with the Capitol label in 1986. The first single reached number three on the country charts. Their next song, Just Another Love , even made it to the top. After ten years she had another number 1 hit. Her streak of success continued over the next few years. The album What Do I Do With Me went platinum. In 1991 she won the coveted CMA Award "Country Singer of the Year". It wasn't until the end of the decade that sales began to decline. Tanya Tucker is still active.
After a long break, the album My Turn was released in 2009 . It only contains cover versions of well-known country classics that were originally recorded by men. Star guests include Rhonda Vincent and Jim Lauderdale .
In August 2017, she released Forever Loving You, a tribute single to Glen Campbell, who had recently died of complications from Alzheimer's disease. In a press release, Tucker stated that while their relationship and subsequent breakup were difficult, they later reconciled. The death of Campbell is very close to her.
In August 2019, Tucker's 25th studio album, While I'm Livin ' , was released. It was produced by Brandi Carlile and Shooter Jennings . It includes a cover version of the Miranda Lambert hit The House That Built Me . The Rolling Stone chose it in its Balance Sheet as "best country and Americana album in 2019". The entertainment magazine Variety also counted it among the best country albums of the year and even ranked it among the best of the decade. Tucker also received her first award for Country Album of the Year for the album at the 2020 Grammy Awards , after ten nominations in the previous decades . The song Bring Me Flowers Now was also voted Country Song of the Year . Tucker performed the song live with Brandi Carlile at the award ceremony.
