Jim Lauderdale (born April 11, 1957 in Statesville , North Carolina ) is an American country singer and songwriter.

First steps

The son of a clergyman and a music teacher gained his first musical experience as a drummer in a school band. After graduating from college, he moved to New York where he joined the local country and folk scene. At times he acted as an actor in theater performances. He was discovered on tour in Los Angeles by Pete Anderson, producer of Dwight Yoakam . In 1989 he played his first album, which was not released by the record company. But it got him into Nashville , the center of country music .

Career

First he was hired as a songwriter by Bluewater Musik Verlag. At the same time, he worked as a background vocalist on recordings by Dwight Yoakam, Carlene Carter and others. His first album was released on the Reprise label in 1991: Planet of Love . Rodney Crowell and John Leventhal contributed to its production . He then moved to the Atlantic label , where his second album, Pretty Close to the Truth , was released in 1994 .

In the following years he changed the record company several times. In 1999 he recorded the album I Feel Like Singing Today for the Rebel label together with old star Ralph Stanley . In the following years two more albums were produced with Stanley, including Lost in the Lonesome Pines in 2002 , which was awarded a Grammy for best bluegrass album. Despite his success as a musician, Jim Lauderdale has made a name for himself in the country scene, above all as a songwriter. Numerous stars like George Strait or the Dixie Chicks have used his material.
