George Strait
George Harvey Strait (born May 18, 1952 in Poteet , Atascosa County , Texas ) is an American country singer and an important proponent of neo-traditionalism . By 2015 he reached number one on the Billboard country charts with 22 albums and 60 singles . In his 35-year career he has sold more than 100 million records and is nicknamed the "King of Country".
biography
Childhood and youth
Strait was born in Texas in 1952, the son of math teacher John Byron Strait Sr. (1922-2013) and Doris Couser (1930-2010). George Strait and his brother (1950-2009) were raised after his parents' early divorce from their father in the town of Pearsall in Frio County , while the sister grew up with their mother. They regularly spent weekends on the family ranch that was run by their grandparents. He started making music as a teenager and played in a rock 'n' roll school band, among others . In December 1971, at the age of 19, he married his school friend Norma. He dropped out of college and went to the army instead. During his three years in the military, he was transferred to Hawaii and became a member of a country band that emerged from the Army and performed outside the barracks. His musical role models were Merle Haggard , George Jones and Bob Wills .
After his military service, Strait studied agriculture at Texas State University from 1975 and then worked as a foreman on a ranch. While still a student, he got together as a singer with the band Ace in the Hole through a note on the notice board . The group played in clubs and dancehalls around San Antonio , Texas and quickly built a fan base.
First steps
In 1976 the first singles were recorded at D Records. The small label belonged to the George Jones producer "Pappy" Daily, who was the grandfather of one of the band members. There were three original compositions by Strait, which were not successful. 1977 Strait produced some demo tapes together with the songwriter Darrell Staedler and offered them to various record companies without success.
After completing his studies, Strait worked on a ranch, played a few demos for the MCA label and finally got a contract at the age of 29. The first piece that was published there was the Dean-Dillon composition Unwound . The single made it into the top 10 of the country singles chart . After the success of the single, his first album Strait Country was recorded with session musicians . It stayed in the country charts for over a year. His old band continued to tour with him. The next singles also reached top positions in the country charts. In 1982 he had his first number 1 country hit with Fool Hearted Memory . With the album Right or Wrong , he entered the official album charts for the first time in 1984 and stayed in the country charts for two years. With the album Does Fort Worth Ever Cross Your Mind he reached number 1 in the country album charts for the first time.
Country music superstar
For more than three decades, George Strait dominated country music. From 1981 to 1999, all studio and live albums and all major compilations reached platinum status . He reached number 1 in country albums 25 times, from the 1990s he was also regularly in the top 10 of the official sales charts and was at the top 5 times there. His quadruple album Strait Out of the Box , released in 1995, is his most successful release and one of the best-selling boxed album releases of all time, with over 8 million copies sold. He can boast over 100 placements in the country singles, 44 times he was first there. From 1986 to 1989 he had 11 number 1 hits in a row. In the official single charts , in which traditional country music hardly appeared in the 1980s and 1990s, he was regularly represented from 2000 and came up to number 23 (2002 with She'll Leave You with a Smile ). With Give It All We Got Tonight he had a million seller in 2012. The song's number one placement on the country charts made Strait the first artist with 60 hit singles on Billboard .
In 1992 he played the lead role in his own musical film Pure Country . The soundtrack album sold over 6 million copies and is one of his three most successful releases , along with the 1995 album box and the number one hit collection 50 Number Ones from 2004.
In total, Strait had sold more than 100 million records by 2015. Up to and including 2015, he received 13 multiple platinum, another 22 platinum and a further eleven gold awards in the USA . He received 88 of the most important music awards in the United States until 2006, including 16 Billboard Awards and the 2003 National Medal of Arts . In 2006 he was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame ; In 2009 the Academy of Country Music named him Artist of the Decade.
Strait was based on well-known styles such as honky tonk and western swing and was one of the founders of neo-traditionalism . He was also able to assert himself successfully against new trends and new generations of musicians from the 1990s. In the 2000s he also broke new ground, for example with the vocal experimental album The Road Less Traveled (2001). Two years later he released the concert DVD For the Last Time: Live from the Astrodome from a performance at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo , which was last held at the Astrodome. With Alan Jackson he released his first two duet singles in 2000 and 2002. In 2007 a joint concert album with Jackson and Jimmy Buffett was released .
In 2012 Strait announced that it would go on a farewell tour for two years, after which it would only play selected shows and perform in Las Vegas . A recording of the final concert at AT&T Stadium in Arlington , to which many guest stars had been invited, was released in 2014 under the title The Cowboy Rides Away . In 2015 he released his 28th studio album entitled Cold Beer Conversation . In 2017, Strait still appeared in a total of ten shows in Las Vegas.
Private life
Strait has two children with his wife Norma. In 1981 son George Jr. and 1972 daughter Jenifer were born, who died in 1986 at the age of 13 in a car accident.
