Chip Taylor
Chip Taylor , actually James Wesley Voight , (born March 21, 1940 in New York City , New York ) is an American songwriter .
Career
Taylor is the younger brother of actor Jon Voight and thus the uncle of Angelina Jolie and James Haven . After an unsuccessful attempt to become a professional golfer, Chip Taylor started a career in the music business. He composed pop and rock songs alone or with other composers such as Al Gorgoni, Billy Vera , Ted Daryll and Jerry Ragavoy. His best-known compositions are the Troggs ( The Troggs ) interpreted piece Wild Thing , Angel of the Morning , written for Merrilee & the Turnabouts , (a very successful cover version came from Juice Newton ); and Try (Just a Little Bit Harder) recorded by Janis Joplin . Other pieces include the pop hits I Can't Let Go , Make Me Belong to You , I Can Make It With You , Step Out of Your Mind , Country Girl City Man and I'll Hold Out My Hand as well as the country hits Sweet Dream Woman and Son of a Rotten Gambler .
At the end of the seventies Taylor gave up the music business and became a professional gambler ( blackjack and horse racing ). Since 1996 he has been releasing albums again, such as the album "Hit Man", on which he reinterpreted old songs (including Wild Thing , Angel of the Morning and Son of a Rotten Gambler - written for his son Kristian).
He also worked with the violinist Carrie Rodriguez , with whom he released several albums and, at the invitation of Bill Frisell, appeared in the Century of Song series at the RuhrTriennale in autumn 2005 .
