Juice Newton
Judy Kay "Juice" Newton (* 18th February 1952 at Lakehurst Naval Base, New Jersey ) is an American country - pop singer .
Between 1976 and 1989 her 26 hits hit the American country charts. Including the gold-winning singles Angel of the Morning and Queen of Hearts , which were also internationally successful in 1981. In 1983 she was awarded a Grammy.
Career
Newton, called "Juice" since childhood, grew up in Virginia . She started playing the guitar at the age of 13. She initially preferred rhythm and blues , but in the late 1960s she was caught up in the enthusiasm for folk music that flared up in the USA . During her college days she made music in small clubs and coffee houses. Besides music, horses and polo were her great passions.
With her friend, the guitarist and songwriter Otha Young, she founded the rock formation Dixie Peach and a year later the folk-rock trio Juice Newton & Silver Spur . In 1975 they moved to Los Angeles, where they were signed to the RCA label a little later . Two moderately successful albums and a few singles were released. In 1978 Newton & Silver Spur moved to Capitol . The first album on the new label also sold poorly and so Silver Spur broke up. From now on Newton appeared as a soloist. She continued to be supported by Otha Young.
After Newton was able to position several singles in the country charts in the late 1970s, she finally made her commercial breakthrough in 1981 with the long-playing record Juice . The album, recorded under producer Richard Landis, was sold over a million times and went platinum. The decoupled singles Angel of the Morning (originally by Merrilee Rush , 1968) and Queen of Hearts reached high placements in both the pop and country charts. The Sweetest Thing (I've Ever Known) , written by Otah Young, was her first number 1 hit in the country charts. In the same year she was voted best young singer of the year by the Academy of Country Music .
Her next album, Quiet Lies , released in 1982 , was equally successful. Again several hit singles were released: Love's Been a Little Bit Hard on Me , Break It to Me Gently and Heart of the Night . The album itself went gold and earned it a Grammy . This was followed by a brief dry spell, which was quickly overcome after a return to RCA in 1984. The highlight was an appearance in front of President Ronald Reagan .
A stronger orientation towards country music was the trigger for her streak of success from the mid-1980s. Several number 1 hits and top 10 placements were achieved in quick succession. You Make Me Want to Make You Mine , Hurt (both 1985) and Both to Each Other (Friends & Lovers) (1986), sung with Eddie Rabbitt , reached number one on the country charts. In the late 1980s her sales figures and chart positions fell, but she continued to release albums and is still touring the United States regularly.
2005 Newton participated in the American variant of the comeback show Hit Me, Baby, One More Time part and sang beside her hit Queen of Hearts also Pieces of Me by Ashlee Simpson . However, she had to admit defeat to PM Dawn in the preliminary round . In autumn 2010 an album followed with duets, including with Melissa Manchester , Glen Campbell and Willie Nelson .
