The twin-tube Berg Bock tunnel is 2738 meters long and is one of the 10 longest road tunnels in Germany .

Berg Bock tunnel, northern portal

As part of the federal motorway 71 , between the Suhl / Zella-Mehlis junction and the Suhl motorway triangle , it crosses under the Glaskopf mountain (709 m) and its side summit, Berg Bock (681.5 m), after which the motorway tunnel was named.

The tunnel has a gradient of around 1% towards the south, the north portal is 527  m above sea level. NN , the south portal at 498 m. Construction began in 1999, and commissioning three years later. The marksman Anke Schumann, wife of Ralf Schumann , was a tunnel sponsor. The total cost of the tunnel was around EUR 68 million.

construction

The western tube has a length of 2738 m and the eastern tube of 2718 m. The distance between the tubes is about 25 m. Each tube has a clearance height of 4.5 m and a clearance width of 9.5 m, which is divided into two 3.5 m wide lanes, edge strips of 0.25 m and emergency walkways on both sides of 1.0 m wide. In each tube there are three 50 m long breakdown bays at a distance of 685 m. The directional lanes are connected by nine cross tunnels at intervals of around 300 m, three of which are passable. The tunnel was built with blasting and shotcrete lining according to the new Austrian tunnel construction method . The tubes were driven in parallel from both portals. The standard cross-sectional area is 80.5 m². 480,000 m³ of excavated material accumulated and was installed in the subsequent sections of the route. The tubes are ventilated lengthways by jet fans .

safety

According to a test by the ADAC , the Berg Bock tunnel is one of the safest in Germany. There are, for example, closed emergency booths with a camera every 150 m, the cross tunnels with fire protection doors every 300 m and, in the breakdown bays, an additional cross gallery for emergency vehicles with a possibility to drive over between the tunnel tubes.

Specialty

In the tunnel there is a speed limit of usually 80 km / h. There is a measuring point for speed monitoring at km 128 in each direction of travel, in the second emergency stop after the northern tunnel portals. It works with infrared light , which the driver cannot see. This is to prevent the "flashed" driver from being frightened and causing an accident. The data is automatically transmitted to the fine office in Artern via data line .
