Both tubes have a mouth profile , the lengths for the direction of travel Erfurt (east tube) are 1,097 m and for the direction of travel Schweinfurt (west tube) 1123 m. The distance between the tubes is about 25 m. Each tube has a clearance width of 9.5 m and a clearance height of 4.5 m. These have two 3.5 m wide lanes, edge strips 0.25 m on both sides, emergency walkways 1.0 m wide, 1 breakdown bay and 3 cross tunnels to the other lane. The tunnel was built with blasting and shotcrete lining according to the new Austrian tunnel construction method . The excavated volume amounted to 167,000 m³. The tubes are ventilated lengthways by jet fans.
The safety standard corresponds to that of the Rennsteig tunnel . Each tunnel tube has seven closed emergency call niches with a camera and fire extinguisher at a distance of 150 m, and both tubes are connected every 300 m with fire protection doors. 41 video cameras monitor the traffic and LED floor lighting facilitates orientation.
