history

The place was first mentioned in 1310 as Rentewighusen . From 1360 to 1535 a sideline of the lords of Bibra was owned. The owners then changed often. After all, the castle belonged to the Lords of Witzleben .

The place belonged to the old property of the County of Henneberg and when the Counts of Henneberg - Schleusingen died out in 1583, including the jurisdiction of lower jurisdiction, it was in noble hands, but belonged to the Amt of Maßfeld under sovereignty . With this he came to the Duchy of Saxony-Meiningen in 1680 . In 1723 he went in exchange for the office of Schalkau to the Duchy of Saxony-Hildburghausen , which affiliated him to the office of Behrungen . In 1826 he returned to Sachsen-Meiningen with the office.

In the 18th century a simple manor house was built, which the community acquired in 1928. From 1991 to 2007 the place was the seat of the administrative community Grabfeld .

With the opening of the Schweinfurt – Meiningen railway in 1874 and the Rentwertshausen – Römhild railway in 1893, the town experienced a certain upswing. During the GDR times, this was the end of the line for the railway in the direction of Schweinfurt; After the fall of the Wall, the line in the direction of Schweinfurt was put back into operation.
